I will have 105,000 miles in a few weeks on the van. Maintenance manual says replace the timing belt, tune up, and fluid change ( transmission, engine, brake) at 105K. I am thinking about changing the water pump since they have to remove it I am told to replace the belt,. Do you think I should change the spark plug wires and accessory belts? Anything else I should do? Perhaps radiator hoses? I will have the work done at a garage so I know this will cost more, then again this is our only car and I want it to last. I hope to get another 100K out of the van.

Also how far over the 105,000 can you go before having the timeing belt service? Going on vacation and will be close if not past 105,000 miles when done.

Anyone have any Honda repair boards they visit and can suggest?

Thanks for your help.

I have a 1994 Geo Prizm that has the similar timing belt service requirements (every 60,000 miles). It's not actually a mileage requirement, it's the condition of the belt. Like a fan belt, the one on the Prizm dries out, cracks, etc. If it breaks, the pistons hit the valves and... /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

If the Honda is the same, there should be a place where they can inspect the belt. However, at 105,000 miles, personally, if at all possible, I'd have all the things you mention before heading off on vacation.

I wouldn't replace the water pump, unless there is an issue. I would replce the belts, hoses, wires and plugs. I'd ask for an inspection of the throttle body and have them do a cleaning if needed. Since they are in the vicinity, there should be no major labor increase.

Replacing the water pump with the timing belt is pretty standard among most reputable shops. I would have it done, especially if you are paying a shop to do the work. I think it adds about an hour to the shop rate (in addition to the timing belt replacement), compared to several hours as a stand alone job. The water pump (genuine Toyota) on my Camry was about $90. Good luck,
Will

Have had Hondas for years, no problem getting 250,000 miles. First Honda had 167000 miles when I replaced the timing belt, the one taken off looked as good as the new one, 248,000 miles when traded. Second Honda, replaced the belt at 170,000, looked good. Traded it with 227,000 miles. Presently have 1995 Odyssey with 176,000, original belt still looks good, only repair other than tires and brake pads, was exhaust bracket on back of motor. Tougher than woodpecker lips /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You will know what it costs for a new head if that timing belt breaks. Reccommended is 100k. It is much wiser and smarter to change it now or maybe pay dearly later. I have had Honda's and an Acura since 1986. I change the water pump with the timing belt. It is cheap and about 20 minutes worth of work. Of course they do charge flat rates at most garages. Also any seals in the front of the motor that may be leaking or weeping. The hoses and belts would get changed if it were my car. Life expectancy is around 100k on them. The wires would stay unless the motor skips or the wires show signs of wear. Open the hood at night with the motor running. Look for shorting out wires. You will not miss them in the dark if you have any bad ones.

I would replace the belt now. I have never has one break on my Toyota but the little Toyota is a chain. I did have one break on my Ford Mustang SVO (yes--it was found on road dead). It broke almost exactly 500 miles past the recommended replacement. I would get it done as soon as possible but that is just me perhaps /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif. I would also get new hoses and belts etc. The water pump--hmmmmmm--well, do you think something is wrong with it? You might get another 30,000 out of that one. If you get a new one get an OEM part.
