2 vs 3 spd HST and transmission controls

I wonder if the high gear in a 2 speed is really high? Maybe it’s just a medium and they are doing without the high gear. In that case, it’d be fine. But if it’s really a low and high speed gear that would stink.

I have no history with Deere HSTs.

With Kubota three range HST transmissions the LOW is lower than the LOW in a two range HST and the three range HST HIGH is higher than the HIGH in a two range HST.

I use a two speed HST, it works for my smaller Max 28, but I dislike the Shifting... ! I always thought IF I go to a larger Tractor I will not only go three speed BUT it has to be a synchronized shift, where the Shifter moves between the gears without coming to a full stop and it doesn't grind.

My first Tractor was a smaller Yanmar/CubCadet, a great tractor and using the two speeds to hit the pile of dirt then go back to high range to transport, all without stopping... luv'd it !

Do all the larger Tractors have a synchro mesh type of transmissions ?

Kubotas do not.

Kubota 'Grand L' models with HST/PLUS transmission have a half step high/low as part of each range.
(ie: LOW/high/low, MED/high/low, HIGH/high/low)

HST/PLUS half steps can be controlled manually with control similar to a turn-signal wand or set to shift half steps automatically as load changes.

The specs on tractors will list the speed a tractor will go in each gear. Use those specs as a guide.

Not for range selectors -- I think all tractors have non-synchro straight cut gears for that. You might find synchros on gear speed selectors and of course there are various types of shift systems for rapid forward/reverse.

Old thread but I was doing some searching and it's relevant to my interests. The 2038r is cool but that's just a 2 speed HST isn't it?

I've wondered if the high gear in a 2 speed is really high? Maybe it's just a medium and they are doing without the high gear. In that case, it'd be fine. But if it's really a low and high speed gear that would stink.

Per the operators manual..
Choose a speed range to match work application.

L Low speed operations such as tilling hard soil, mowing long grass, or heavy hauling. Machine speed is decreased, but machine power is increased.
N Neutral position. Lever must be in the N (neutral) position when starting the engine.
H High speed operations such as light tilling and hauling, mowing short grass and transport. Machine speed is increased, but machine power is decreased.

Doubt it "stinks".. ;)

My JD 4052R range selection is not synchronized.

I Just bought a JD2025 R, it has the two speed only. It doesn't really limit your work that much. The high range is pretty much just for travelling and is probably equivalent to the high range on a Kubota. I do find my self shifting a lot but I think if I had a 3 range I would also be shifting. I traded in a Kubota BX for the JD and the JD has bigger tires and better speeds in both ranges. The low range in the Kubota was just a little bit too slow. The JD low range is just right for mowing. I'm sure 3 speeds are better but I wouldn't let it be a deal breaker on a tractor.

Dave, you must mow a lot slower than I. I mow in high. I rarely use low. But I don't have a loader. :)

I actually don’t quit mow flat out in low range. Two reasons is the cut is a little better and due to moles my yard beats you to death going any faster. I’m mowing a little faster with the JD because of a suspension seat and the larger tires.
