2 vs 3 spd HST and transmission controls

I bought a John Deere 4052R. Only regret I have is maybe should have went with the 4066R. I think the extra horse would help pulling the hills here in western Iowa in road gear. But with that said I love the R series. The E throttle and load match are awesome with the loader. I figure that I'm saving alittle fuel with the E throttle. My biggest point that I looked at is the resale value. I figure the R holds better then the E series. Check out tractor house and compare. You will love ether one but I think you will think I I did. Features are very nice on the R and time were worth the money. My question is. Can you have to much horsepower on reserve ? Good luck on your decision

I just today bought a HST tractor.
I was looking at about 6 used tractors, and settled on a 2 speed model.
The decision point was that this one moved at exactly the speed I mow at in low range, full pedal.
That speed is just over 5MPH, the speed I like to mow at.
Right or wrong, I will find out when the grass grows.
The others I tried, went either too fast, or too slow at full pedal.
All I can do now is hope I made the right decision,,, :confused2:

when you get to the age where Social Security is paying for your tractors,,
EVERYTHING you do is better when done S L O W ,,, :laughing:

Most HST tractors have a cruise control or offer it at an option. So that you can find the ground speed you like and lock it in.
after doing some more looking and question asking, I am definitely leaning towards the R series. The transmission issue is something I think I would like but the easy on/off of the loader seems like something that would be really important to me. The difference in price between an E series and an R series is about $5k. To help make up for the difference, I'm considering the 3033R vs the 3039R. I lose 6 horses and the turbocharger and that might be something I like but maybe not for the $2500 it would save me. I don't run on the road, and I don't pull long hills, so I may not really need it. Relative to my 8N, the horses and torque in a 3033R would still be huge and should meet all my needs.
So, that's where I am right now. I have until the end of February to make good on the current prices and financial incentives.

Something that maybe a lot of people are not aware of yet, but the new JD 2038R is in reality a deluxe 3038e. Quick attach loader as well as several other upgrades vs the std 3038e machines. Just another option to throw into the mix.

Recently purchased my 2032R and at the time I was looking at the 2038R on paper but it would not be available for monthes and I did not have the extra money to spend. A few of the extra features are gas hood supports, I like the old fashion mechanical rod that just works and does not need replacing, like a car, the more fancy options you get leads to more costly repairs down the road. But everyone has a different income and that could be no concern to some.

Old thread but I was doing some searching and it’s relevant to my interests. The 2038r is cool but that’s just a 2 speed HST isn’t it?
I’ve wondered if the high gear in a 2 speed is really high? Maybe it’s just a medium and they are doing without the high gear. In that case, it’d be fine. But if it’s really a low and high speed gear that would stink.
