John Deere 1250
Hi All,
First post from a Tractor and attachment newbie! Purchased a low hour 1250 JD with 100 Loader and 4 used attachments, one of them being a 2 bottom plow. We hooked it up and plowed for about 1/2 hr and everything was going great until we hit a massive rock. Now fully understanding the "float control" for the loader after reading this forum, ours was set to stay down and the plow actually uprooted this rock that must weight 50 to 60 pounds. I think we were probably going to fast also (when I say we, I mean my son who was driving). Also reading the tips of hitting the clutch as quick as possible will aid in this not happening again - so lesson learned. We cannot figure out how to get the plow "reset". I have tried backing up on it, but it doesn't budge and slides in the dirt. Should I back against a stump maybe? I don't see a pin sheared so assuming it's not that kind of plow.

I have a buddy with alot of experience that when I can arrange both he and I being off work at same time planning to come try and reset it, but I'd like to learn myself (maybe this will help somebody else coming here too). He thinks it's an 1950's circa International Harvester plow but I can't find a photo that looks exactly like this one. Here are some photos - any help is greatly appreciated! Look forward to learning from all of you!

Yes, backing up usually resets them easily. I'd soak the inside mechanism and spring with some penetrating oil, and then raise the plow somewhat to allow it to swing partially back into position as you back up. You might have too much down pressure as it looks in the pictures. If that doesn't work, try to raise the plow to get the point off the ground and then jack up that forward facing rusted arm to attempt to swing it partially back in place. Maybe a winch strap wrapped around the upper frame and that arm will pull it upwards. Once free and the rusty parts soaked with oil, it should pop back into position when you drop the plow to the ground and back up.

I agree that lack of lubrication is likely the problem.

Here is what my Ford Series 101 plow looks like inside the trip mech.

All Three Point Hitch tractors have hydraulic depth control, set with a control lever on right side of the operating station.

Most older tractors, fewer new tractors, have Draft Control, a second lever which automatically raises an implement encountering an immovable underground object. Do you have a Draft Control lever next to your depth control lever? Set properly Draft Control should make plow "trips" rare events.

You can back up against a stump or use a pry bar to get it back reset. It's probably just tight from lack of use. You can also loosen that pivot bolt at the bottom just a little and it will be easier to reset.

They are spring trip, not shear bolt. All you have to do is get it to latch back and start plowing again.

I agree they are IH plows, I am unsure of the model number though.

Thanks everyone for the ideas and information! The JD 1250 does have draft control, but we unfortunately had it set to off so it took the full brunt.. The rock actually flipped up and out of the ground. We won't do that again. We hadn't used the draft control with the box blade we ran or the disk, but always will with the plow! So far I emptied 1/2 a can of Wd40 and am going to follow with a silicone lubricant I've used on other things... It's made for locks so should get in there pretty good. I'm hoping I don't have to open the whole thing up to get it reset... A longer term project I will. Would love to figure out the model number on this and find a manual for it. Will search Google on IH plows some more. Did a photo search on them and didn't see one exactly like it. Thanks all!

Wait, you think you did something wrong because the plow did it’s thing and tripped like intended when it hit a rock? I live in an area where no-til is insufficient so we need to use moldboard plows. When last built in the USA, plows had incorporated auto reset. Not sure what your model is as it is earlier than our 1963 semi-mounted which has a spring trip latch. I now have IH plows with auto-reset and 2 different trip designs. I also have a 2 bottom fully mounted with a shear bolt trip. Unless you have perfect ground, you are going to hit something and your plow is going to trip. Clean, get rid of rust, lube and go. Try looking up an IH 311 plow. The trip beam looks like yours but the main frame is different. The 311 started selling in 1957.

NO, draft contorl is NOT used as "trip" control! Tractor hydraulics are far too slow to prevent damage to an implement, that is why the OP's plow is equiped with a trip mechinism, and from his post, it worked as designed.
