I am new to the tractor world and have been learning by trial and error. I recently wanted to plow aprx 5 ac for a small garden and wildlife food plot. I borrowed a 2 bottom plow which the owner has no idea of the manufacture or hook-up procedures. This plow is different from any other bottom plow I have seen. It has an adjustment mechanism to change the blade up or down. The mechanism consists of a screw type bolt with a handle that extends above the top link when it is attached to the plow. I attached the plow to the two lift arms and attached the top link. When I started to plow the plow came up and the handle of the adjustment mechanism bent the top link. Since it was already bent I continued and turned apx 1/4 ac. I bought a new top link and contacted a couple of individuals who have used a bottom plow. Neither of them had ever seen a plow with a adjustment mechanism like the one I have. We made every adjustment we could think of to no avail. I believe there is some part missing that keeps the plow from coming up but am not sure. I would appreciate any help or suggestions. I have pictures but they are to large to attach. Can send them e-mail if anyone wants to see them.

Sure doesn't sound like any 3-point plow I've ever dealt with. We need a picture.

I don't know why it would be there but on most there is an adjuster for the plow tilt as to being in the furrow or out to be level.

I believe that's an Allis Chalmers plow. (I'm not having much luck transferring pics from email to here)

Try this. Move the top link to the highest position where it attaches to the tractor. Extend the top link several inches. Also, extend that leveling crank so that the plow frame sets relatively level with the ground with the plow raised slightly above the ground. I have no clue as to how or why the top link bent. I can't see where the plow would hit the top link in its normal travel.

I just had another individual come by and look at the plow. There is a bolt hole, bolt is missing, on the bar that hooks to the lift arms. There are two bars, one inside the other. We believe a bolt goes in, one that has threads to about 1/2 inch from the bottom and is concaved. The non-threaded portion would go into the iner shaft preventing the plow from coming up. This would act as a shear pin and break if a rock or large stump were hit. It would break off under the threads, that way you could take the bolt out and retrieve the broken part and install a new bolt. This is just a theory at this time. I went to the CO-OP and it is closed today, so I am unsure if such a bolt exists. Anyone know of such a bolt?

The crank on my Massey model 66 was in the way and would hit the back of the tractor when it was raised if the handle was down. The lift arms are too short on compacts. I cut the handle shorter. That might be the type of mechanism he is referring to.

Jerry, I have an emailed picture of the plow. I'm having difficulty getting it posted on here. The "crank" in this case is the strut running from the top of the A-frame to the rear of the plow. In the picture the tail of the plow looks 10" higher than the front.

HERE IT IS FOLKS!

Just had my bro-in-law tell me he thinks it's a Case plow from the EAGLE HITCH days.

The longer I stare at it, the more it looks like an Allis Chalmers snap coupler plow that has been modified to use as a 3-point hitch model.

I looked up Allis Chalmers on the INTERNET and am pretty sure I have a 2 bottom Allis Chalmers, as suggested by Farmwithjunk, minus the quick coupler. Now I have to find a bolt or something to keep the plow from coming up.

Farmwithjunk has a picture of the plow posted in an attachment for everyone to view. It may not be a Allis Chalmers, but looks like the one I found on the internet.

Another shot. Looks like the top link is WAY too short for starters. I still think it should attach to the HIGHEST hole where it hooks to the tractor also.

Note: The top link in the pictures is in the last position we tried to solve the problem. The top link was attached as per the norm when the top link was bent. As I stated we tried every conceivable way to prevent the plow from coming up. In each position, as in the one in the attach, I would lower the blades, have them dig in and move the tractor forward SLOWLY, and when the adjustment mechanism touched the top link I would stop, back up and we would attempt another solution. The shear pin theory seems to be one that may work. Something has to stop the blades from continuous rising.

I have a Brinley plow for my old Wheel Horse garden tractor that has the adjustment handle on it. It is used to set the plow at the proper angle. Set right, the plow should dive into the ground, not pull toward the surface. The 3ph should keep it from going too deep.

My guess would be that the acton of the plow lifting the dirt should keep it under ground. If it is coming to the surface then the nose is too high. Shorten the top link. This is just a guess though.

If this doesn't work then lengthen the top link. :)

Look at the attitude of the plow in the pictures. The tail is WAY too high in relation to the front.

We need a side picture from 15 to 20 feet away to show a better perspective.

To compress your pictures:

If you are using Microsoft right click on the file while in explore or my computer window.

Select "Open with"

Select "Microsoft Office Picture Manager"

Select "Edit Picture"

Select "Compress picture"

Select "Documents"

Select File and save as then give it a new name. Now you can post the picture.

That is definitely an old Allis 50 series snap coupler plow (poorly) converted to 3 point hitch(sort of). You will at a minimum need to get a longer than standard toplink to level out that mess. Keep in mind that on this plow the bottom of the share, as viewed from front to back should be level in operating position (buried 6-8 "deep) When viewed from the back, with your right wheel in the just plowed furrow, the frame should be level from side to side. To properly set this plow up, get the tractor and plow up on a level slab of concrete or asphalt, first set the level front to back by adjusting the toplink then roll the tractor's left rear wheel up on a 6X6 or 8X8 wooden block about 2' long, set the brake, and then adjust the lift arms so that the plow is level left to right. This should get you close enough, if the shares aren't wore out. Hopefully, whoever made this rig put enough thought into design, so that it will work.
