If you ever plan on getting out into the open field and doing the work your now letting the crew do A power shuttle will work great for both. If not I would stay looking at the 50 HP range of HST machines. Something Like the Kioti DK 50 if you can still find one New I think it would fit the needs well.

Eric - I do not fear the Tier 4 system. I feel it is an unnecessary and unwarranted addition of paraphernalia onto a system that is not a major source of pollution. Besides it has a history of problems and IMHO is something to avoid, if possible. I see that Probity has a firm grasp of the situation also.

Then pop in a test tube and set the reference voltage to the ECU using a zener diode and bypass the tier 4.

You need to go see these dealers and get some seat time. No buying just trying! And talk to them to feel them out.

Look for an HST machine with side by side pedals as they are easier to run.

Never understand when I see people say that (for either arrangement). I have run them all, and once I get in the zone the pedal arrangement becomes transparent. I can't say it makes much difference to me, and it's not something to pre-bias a shopper with. The only time I think it's a factor is if someone has a handicap and one arrangement is better than the other.

According to the Kioti web site find a dealer option, using the zip code for the city listed you have 2 Kioti dealers one is 34.75 miles away and one is 47.12 miles away.

I will argue with that any day. Pointing out something than many will not really pay attention to when sitting idle not really working the machine can only help them to avoid making a mistake by purchasing the machine and finding out later on that they could have gotten a more comfortable set up.

It is my experience that as we age, everybody gets some kind of knee and hip problems. I've a bum ligament in my right hip that acts up from time to time. Rocker pedals require some lifting of the leg in order to flip from forward to reverse. Also, while I'm sharing wisdom that comes with age, remember to never under-estimate the explosive power of baked beans.

Re: 1st Time "Hobby Farm" Tractor Buyer/User - What do experienced users advise?

Hello Probity,
I am the owner of two older tractors that are 50Hp and over. I can tell you that I do not miss Tier IV paranaphilia!! The simpler, the better if at all possible.
Since you are inclined to do your own maintenance, I think it is important to know how easy your tractor of choice will be in this regard. Since you will get a large trailer, It tells me you are willing to go down the road with a load on it. Therefore, dealer proximity would be my last criteria in my purchasing decision, especialy when going with a used tractor.
Both my tractors are woods acclimated! One with cab. If you plan on going under low hanging branches often, then do not go with a cab.
To my opinion, power shuttle is what you need for your bush hogging wor; but if doing so going forward, and likewise backward, them HST could prove itself to be superior(if not saying the winner). As your engine RPM will not change(somewhere between 2200 and 2400RPM), it translates into your PTO RPM not slowing, but staying at 540RPM.
For remotes, the more, the better. If you get two rears and one front standard, you will thank yourself latter down the road for having them on already. As your operations are smelling the future use of a grapple!:D...
For your bush hog, a six footer sounds just right. But my choice would be to get a heavy duty model. Nothing less, as it will take all you give it! Right?
As you have done your homework, a 55HP tractor is just about right (50HP at the PTO). HST will rob some power...
Be aware that ground clearance, and grill guard are of the upper importance when working in the woods. AG tires a must. And the bigger the better (except for tight quarter maneuvering). Same with tractor weight. If you use a BB (box blade), a heavyer tractor does make a good difference at the end of the day! Loss of traction is a waste of time and fuel and effeciency.
I will let the debate about the paint color to you!! Go to your dealers and have some seat time. Pay good attention to ergonomics, noise and seat comfort.
Best of luck, and keep the membership posted with pics, when you get the papers finalized!:tractor:
