I bought a JD 5055d 2 wheel drive tractor this year. I use it for chores and small square baling. It is along side a 53 year old Massey Ferguson model 50 Diesel. So far so good. I needed a new/second tractor for years and the addition of they haying chores pushed me very close to a new tractor. What pushed me over the edge was the coming of tier 4 final engines. The 3029 engine in the Deere is a great engine and I have first hand experience with it in generator applications. IMHO, the engine is the number 1 reason to buy this tractor. It has a 8 forward/4 speed reverse gear tranny and while not technically a shuttle shift, is fast from fwd to reverse as the left hand shifter is hi-lo/reverse. To reverse is simply to pull the shifter straight to the rear. The tractor is very nimble and has what I think is a tight turning radius. The front end is a bit light with a heavy 3 pt implement, but I'm adding front weights. Tractor has a mechanical independent PTO, is a very simple set-up, comes with one set of remotes, has great visibility, easy power steering, starts great and is comfortable to ride. It is also a tier 2 engined tractor.

While I have the 5055d, my brother is looking at the 5045d - lower hp, smaller rear wheels, to get lower price point and a bit smaller stance.n his tractor would totally be used for camp/maintenance duties - bush hogging, brush pulling, trailering firewood and maybe some light front end loader work.

There are a ton of Deere dealers near me, this tractor, while made in India, is a John Deere tractor, not a rebadged brand or a licensed copy mfg'd by another company. Parts and service don't appear to be or will be a problem. Resale will be very good due to the green color.

I think you could get into the 4045d with a loader for under your price range.

FYI - I think the 4x4 5045/5055e tractors for 2015 will be tier 4, haven't heard/seen regarding the 'd' 4x2 models, but am sure they will follow. The good news is, at least around me, is there are plenty of left over 2014 tier 2 5045/55 tractors.

Good luck,
Bill

That's a good point. I have seen people panic and forget to push in the clutch. The resulting damage is not always pretty.

I for one. learned that the hard way. It took about an hour for me to get the H out of the barn wall afterward. Always remember what direction you're going:mur:
