We wanted to clear a walking loop trail thru a section of brush and woods on our property. So, on the first day it stopped raining, we decided to tackle our 1st project with the new tractor! This pic shows where we started...

The ground was wet enough to pop most of the smaller stuff pretty easy and we began to open up some of the lightly overgrown ares first...

Some ares were real thick, a lot of brush and tough, thick vines...

Some of the vines were 6" an larger in diameter, and they had killed and dragged down quite a few trees...

Get 'er done!! Looking good.
Are you burning the vines or ???

I had a huge vine problem as well. If not already on your list, I would recommend getting some good loppers and cutting the vines that are climbing all the trees before they do any more damage. After they're cut off you can try to pull down (it's kind of fun but dangerous as things fall out of the tree... wear a hardhat and goggles) or just leave there and they'll come down on their own.

Lol, that's a typical early spring issue in upstate NY! This year we had 120" of snow, even set a new record of 19 consecutive days of measurable snowfall in late Jan. The last of the snow finally melted just a week ago, primarily because we got dumped on by several more inches of rain. Lots of creek and low land flooding, but thankfully that is about as bad as our place gets. When the trail is done it should be fine for walking and the little lawn tractor. I just won't be taking the big one in the woods until it drys up.

You know, someone really should design retractable bucket hooks. Hooks are handy, but can be a real hindrence when clearing brush. Several times I was dragging around 20'-30' of vines snagged on the bucket hooks. Then they wanted to wrap around the axles... /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Good looking tractor....
Now get that box off the back and get yourself a rotary cutter. With that much land you need it, and it'll do a number on the briars, sapplings etc you'll be dealing with for years to come.

One suggestion, a toothbar. I was surprised how well they work on brush and "holding" on to it as it is ripped out of whatever it is growing in.

Markham and others are talked about on here all the time.

What is that on the 3 pt hitch?

Hello DannyD - that is bonafide Kubota ballast box. With the price of steel, I figured it was just as cheap to buy it. When I started this project, I thought a toothbar might be a necessity. However, I am amazed at how well the regular bucket has done. I'm not really looking to get the Markham 5-tooth because I don't do a lot of aggressive digging. I would rather have something like a cross between a Markham and an H&H EZ Landscaper. I think that would do a fine job on the brush, but apparently nobody makes one. I can't decide if that or pallet forks for the bucket will be the next new implement. I have been scouring the Pennysaver, Swap Sheet, local paper and Equipment Trader for a used 4' or 5' bush hog and box blade, but they are far and few between.

Mine weren't as overgrown as that. Cleared what I had to with lopers before I got the JD. Mowed first with grass whip and DR trimmer on wheels, then Gravely, now JD 4010 with LX4. Got about 3 miles or more of trails down there now.

Found the JD FEL in full down position makes a pretty good dozer for vines and stuff. I've pushed a few to the side and made a path through one area with the FEL in full down position. The FEL in level position is good for cutting small stumps, if they're dead enough to cut. Best to cut any stumps to the ground with chain saw to keep the tractor from climbing them and cutter from hitting them.

Nice set of pictures. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
It does not look like you have anything in the weight box. Add 3 or 400 lbs to it. You will not believe how much more work you will be able to do. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Ron - I do have it about half filled, just trying to keep lawn damage to a minimum as I have to traverse lawn to reach these woods.

OK EXPERTS... Check the pic, I found this clip in the dirt after a glint of sunlight caught my eye. What is it and where does it go??
