Gale, I'm glad I could help out. I think for what you intend to do that truck will serve you well. Congrats on the new truck and hope to see some pics of it when you get it in your possession.

A bit late here but I used a '90 F-150 with the 4.9 six, 3.08 gears, and E4OD trans to pull my 6400 pound (actual loaded weight) TT all over. With the 3.08 gears the factory rated the truck for 5,000 pounds, mine did very well with the additional 1400. Added a Flowmaster cat-back, secondary trans cooler, and secondary electric fan. No way I could get it to tow in OD, though.

The reason I could pull the additional weight so well was because of the E4OD, that trans is simply massive and cool running. Not sure though if it was available on the '95 F 150. Yes, the suspension in the rear is soft, I added a pair of helper springs.

The seller still is using the 1994 F150 (the VIN check showed it was NOT a 1995) so we may pick it up on Wednesday since we are giving him a few days to close on another work truck.

In the mean time our daughter has decided it is too nice (no body accidents/salt damage, spent first 10 years in TX) then Nashville area for the project we had planned to use and that she wants to keep it as her first vehicle.

So Friday after looking as some more junk someone posted an 1980 F-100 300 inline six with the 4 speed manual transmission while we were out looking that day. We were 50 miles from home and eating lunch to head back home and I just used my Droid to it the web and there it was. I think the guy was dizzy from it selling within hours of posting.

After having put a couple hundred miles on the old truck I am impressed. The truck is his showing some rust in the expected places of that era in these parts. Can not do a carfax on it due to that was the year before the 17 digit vin became standard. I guess it has 140K.

The verbal history was it was owned by farmer #1 then #2 for the first many years then 9 years by the seller who put 6K miles on it over that time when it was parked a lot but in continued use.

While the engine does have a build up of oil/dust due to seeping valve/side plate gasket seeps it does run with power and shifts well (after I learned it had to go to the floor).

I think it will be a good "farm" truck. That 300 cid engine will really pull. The four speed in that year does not have the granny gear like the 5 speeds because 4th is OD but it seems to do well in 1st.

Because we are wanting a simple truck for this project with little upkeep it not having 4WD or factor air was a plus. There is a tractor to use in the mud.

As always they want too much money. He wanted $1500 and I asked many $100 bills. I think over time $1000 should have bought it but when he replied $1200 and it drove out well (hit 75 MPH and was totally smooth in the front end) we did the deal.

We got the cooling system fully cleaned (Prestone Cleaner) and we flushed with all new rubber hoses for the radiator and heater this weekend. Next is to get the engine paint showing on the lower sides of the engine then replace both leaking gaskets.

I can see at some point the thermostat and water pump has been replaced and it came with a new battery, etc.

The power steering pump is showing wear (shaft end play) and so I may replace it and the alternator before releasing it for the project since I will not have direct access to it afterwards.

Did is say I was impressed with the torque of the Ford 300 cid inline six?

Did I miss a post...or was the OP describing the truck with a 302 engine in error?
Anyway, that 300 cubic inch straight 6 was a great engine!! Had one in a full sized Bronco (sorry, don't recall the year, but it was a late 80's). Very torquey engine.

My grandfather farmed and the Ford 300 ci was his preferred motor. Great pulling power and a reputation for reliability.

No Roy, you were correct....OP was asking about the 302...I just threw in my experience with my 4.9 six as some people said the 302 was underpowered for towing...well they are NOT...had a friend with the same '90 as mine, his with the 302, 3.55 gears, and the HD tow package, he tried pulling the my trailer, did a LOT better because of the additional hp.

Thanks buck12. The truck we bought Friday does have the 300 cid engine. I typed up the post but most to have left the site without saving it.

The second truck we bought is a 1980 F100 300 inline 6/4 speed manual. Seems to have 140K miles but no 17 digit vin to check out. The verbal history is it was a farm truck for owner #1 and #2 and the seller bought it 9 years ago and put 6K miles on it just doing weekend projects and used it to move about 5 times over the years. It never sat in a non running stated those nine years he stated.

It is tight and drives well even when touching the 75 MPH. It will be a better truck than the 1994 F150 4WD 302 that my daughter decided to keep for herself vs the project we were looking for a truck.

Currently we have cleaned the radiator (prestone cleaner for 5 running hours) and replaced all rubber coolant lines. Next is to degrease it and put new cover gaskets and the top and side of the engine. The Power Steering had a lot of end play so may replace it and the alternator before releasing it of the project to help insure it does not need repairs $$$$ soon.

The truck does have some rust common to those years but is relative clean and straight but seeing it get banged up will not hurt like seeing the TX 1994 rust free/dent free truck get banged up.

The torque of the 300 inline is awesome even after 30 years.

Being a simple 2WD with on AC should help insure little future expenses vs. the 1994 302 auto/4WD with over twice the miles. It really is more simple like an old tractor.

I have a 1992 F150 Supercab 4WD that just hit 47,000 miles . Yes you read that right - only 47K. It also has the underpowered 302. I've had to change the engine rubber (hoses, etc) out just because I don't like driving around with the old rubber parts. I'm the second owner (bought it 8 years ago with 35K). The only issues have been the soft rear springs (going to install a helperspring) and an AC compressor that seized (replaced it with just a pulley). The paint is still original and glossy and the interior is pristine. It's ugly chocolate brown, but it costs me nothing to own and I get people stopping by all the time asking to buy it.

I have the same problem with my 93 f150. Everyone wants to buy it and I have zero interest in selling it.

Kumho Road Venture AT KL78

These are the tires I was going to put on the 1994 F150 before the guy bailed and has been too business to return my money. Today I had these 235.75R15's put on the 1980 F100 and they are awesome. After some thought this was what I was going to run on the F150 too. They are a nice

It is flooding tonight and I just got home and I was hitting water 2-4" in places with the right tires doing around 40 MPH and it never pulled or hydro planed. While the F100 is only 2WD I went with the same tires on all corners so they can be rotated, etc.

The more I drive this 2WH 300 inline 6 with manual transmission the more I like it and will look for a slicker one for myself to have around. I would like to try a 4WD but at 60 and never having owned one my needs are becoming less vs. more. When I do find a slick one with a lot less than 300K miles (deal that died had 332K miles) if it is 4WD it would not be a show stopper.

Yesterday I got the oil changed in the 1980 (when with Rotella 15W-40 since the guy let me have it at the same price of 10W-30 house brand) and was telling the owner about the F150 because I did not know the deal was off. He bought a 1992 F150 351/auto/4x4 with 300K miles on it for parts but now a few years later he has 350K miles on it with OEM motor and transmission the best he can tell so they are tough.

The tag on the valve cover states the engine was built in 1982 that is in the 1980 F100 so I know it was been replaced but I do not when or how many miles. After cleaning on the engine for about three hours tonight it is degreased and now I will get the the top and side oil gaskets replaced and see if it will stay dry.

The 1980 F100 is more like a tractor in that it is simple to work on and has not AC to break. While where it is going the rust will not be a real issue but for my personal use just to have around the place I expect will cost me more than $1200 for a slick one. :)
