1964 Ford 4000 4 cylinder repair/restore

I had one of those carbs on my '41 Farmall. It was a Marvel if it worked. I fabbed up an adapter plate, got a 'U' bent length of steel tubing and mounted a real Rochester single barrel carb in the normal (downdraft) position. Problems solves. A little brazing and some drilling and a new throttle and choke cable and it was good to go.

Those carbs flat suck.

5030- I agree that this carb is difficult to tune (compared to my 1943 Case SC). I have cleaned/rebuilt several carbs (including this one) and after lots of float adjustments, cleanings and mixture screw adjustments, I have found that I have it dialed in pretty good but I have to use the choke a little bit to fine tune the mixture. It starts well when very cold outside, but that choke knob gets moved around a lot...

Thanks for all the info gents. It is definitely not a drain plug. it is threaded hole inside the carb. See item 12 in the attached picture. I guess I will purchase a jet with a # 8-32 thread and give it a try. There seems to be so much info on MS carbs, but I can't find info on this one. I can always resize the hole if the info someday surfaces.

Maybe this will help.

In the diagram/link that MMagis posted, it looks like item #27, "Seat - Power Adjusting Needle" would thread into the hole you show in your photo, but apparently it is only applicable for "Type B" carbs. Is yours a Type B? If so, it would have the adjusting needle in the top half of the carb body. If not, it would likely be plugged. Either way, with nothing in there, it would sure explain a lot about poor performance!

Interesting how that's all wrapped up and around that fuel shutoff solenoid. Can you tell if its a jet or a plug in there now?

By the picture he posted it appeared to be plugged. If it was open the bowl wouldn't hold any gas.

the threaded hole goes from he bowl into the opening for the shaft for the adjusting needle. It is NOT a drain! The tag on the carb says TSX813 63 G. The main adjusting needle shaft enters from the bottom of the carb, not from the inside pointing down as the diagram that I attached on 1/7 9:01am
