1920 sooted up

So took the exhaust manifold off and it was almost clogged off on most of the ports and really packed in the head part. Any idea what would cause this? My theory is it was bogged down a lot. My buddy says not running hot enough and wants to up the thermostat to a 195. Any and all ideas are most welcome

Possible valve stem seals are leaking oil. Is it dry soot or wet/damp soot. Also could be excessive over fueling or a lot of idling time. How much blow-by does the engine have. A lot moisture getting into the exhaust from rain or setting in an excessive damp environment.

Change your oil recently? Even new oil with a high ash level will form deposits in the exhaust manifold

The soot seemed to be somewhat wet. Cant say about the oil change as it hasn't really been ran since we got it. Now it's torn down and going back together. It has 1160 hours on it.

Once running again, I would check for deposits every 25 hours or so, limit idle time to a minimum, and keep the rpm's up while running.

It's not being worked hard enough. You might also check the sir filter and see if it's clogged. That will make the fuel/air ratio too high and contribute to the problem.
