I have a 1710 Ford tractor. I am getting ready to change the Hydraulic Oil tomorrow or the next day. Does it hurt to use an off brand oil, or should I stay with what Ford Dealer has to offer?? I'm still trying to get all the moisture out!
Thanks

Do some research if you plan to use an oil that is not OEM. Make sure the oil meets the manufacturer's recommendation. We see a lot of hydraulic problems related to cheap "just as good" hy oil in our shop. Problems such as brake delamination, wet clutch failure due to heat, hy pump under performance, (low flow, low pressure, premature pump failure). Granted these are not scientific lab experiments but when you see problem after problem and tractor after tractor with hy issues and cheap box store oil you can't help blaming the oil. Heres a John Deere hy oil page to get you started on the research.

X2. We have the same type problems in out part of the country. As stated above, do your research. Just because an oil meets OEM minimum specs, doesn't mean it is the same quality as OEM oil. Most, if not all, OEM's have additives blended in to help with the problems Harvey H mentioned. Not sure if the aftermarket oils include these additives.

Check out this page. I know it talks about the N series tractors, but it explains a little about hydraulic oils. Hydraulic/Transmission Fluid - The Full Story, by Llamas
