I just need to know if you can remove the filter without the oil draining out on a 1538 gear. Does anyone really know, Jambo, Dave?
Silly books don't say squat. I think this is probably the sorriest excuse for a service manual that I've ever seen.

To be honest I'm not sure if you can change just the filter and not make a mess. Maybe if you tip the tractor on its side far enough. I very rarely get a "50" service at 50 hours but I do get that question from customers who want to do the service them self's. If a customer asks I tell them to follow the chart but wait till 100 hr and do the Hyd oil and filter. When I'm doing first 50+ hr. service in shop. I do everything. Fluids and filters. 4WD axle. Air filter only if needed. That gets the services in sink and I have not had any service related issues. Best advice is to use common sense. :2cents:

Then I think I'll wait until 100 hours to change any of the hydraulic stuff when it makes sense to change both. I don't see the rationale of swapping the filter and not changing the oil. I remember car makers saying to change the oil and only changing the filter every other change but that never made any sense to me either. I always change both. Any other way is like taking a shower while wearing a raincoat.

if you do it at 50 you could clean out any metal or crud in there then instead for grinding all of the garbage in there for another 50 hrs. also the dealer i just am having it done said that failure to do the 50 hr service could mess up warranty issues with Mahindra. but not sure how they can prove it when people do it or do not do it themselves. maybe by oem parts vs. replacement parts/filters that is.

just a thought/comment. but hey - it's your tractor.

mine is only a max but **** it cost very hard earned and saved $ ----took me many years to get it and not about to trash it by skimping on the 50 hr service. Just me...

Ditto, I changed everything in my 5035 at 50 hours. There was a lot of crud on the sump screen, and glad to get that out of the system as soon as I did. Good time at that 50 hours to touchy feeley everything underneath and get to know your tractor real personal like... :)

I always shower with a rain coat on ! :umbrella-guy: I don't like getting wet. Seriously though, Try to use good judgment when doing your service. If your doing heavy work with your tractor and putting the spurs to it. Do the full service @ 50 hrs. fluids, filters, the whole 9 yrds even if it recommends just the filter not the fluid. If you just doing lite work you can fudge it a little. As far as Warranty goes. I will always back the customer, within reason, if a service issue would arise.

the 2 local yokels around here - 1 is not a good dealer and a part-timer re: sales and minimal service and Quality is down the tubes as well as their knowledge. the other people that have mice now seem quite legit though a long way away. However the one tech guy seemed to imply for a wheel seal that blwe due to natural stuff and not my running over stumps or trees or big saplings etc. like some people do - seemed to say 'depending on what i see when i open it up and who's fault it was....' well - that was a bit upsetting - however; so far i have been happy and they have expedited their service and repair. service done next day although it was a 3-4 week wait and also they did order the parts for the front wheel hydraulic leak. so - the good dealers out there should be cherished by the people that have them at their disposal. others like me just hope all will be fair with another dealer though outside the range of convenience and also the Mahindra Quality. I could right a large essay re: the kubota i looked at and the delaer that is 4-5 miles away as opposed to 60 for the mahindra. But I did my homework. Drove a tractor for 49 years but first one i ever owned. Chose mahindra.

When I did the complete change at 100 hrs, I found no evidence of any dirt, filings or anything but clean, brand new looking hydro fluid. The old stuff looked no different than the new stuff I put in. There was no sediment, nothing. In my case, just changing the 2 hydro filters would have been sufficient for another 100+ hours, I'm sure.

I guess you get to change two filters with HST tractors, my gear job only has the one. A penny saved is a penny earned.
