I have a 1538 gear that's rolling up on it's 50 hour. The book says to change the hydraulic filter but it seems to me that if I remove the filter to change it, 8 gallons of oil will drain out:confused3:. Oddly enough at 100 hours they call for changing the oil but not the filter:confused:. If the oil stays in I'll swap out the filter at 50 but if not I'm thinking of letting it go to the 100 hour when I change out the oil too. I wonder, did anyone sit down and think about this schedule to see if it made any sense before they put it in print? It also says to change both fuel filters and the front axle oil too, I've barely used 4WD. Both seem a bit premature to me with only 50 hours on the clock. However changing engine oil and filter at the 50 mark does make sense to me. If I remove the hydraulic filter, will the oil drain out?
Oh yeah it looks like I'll likely have to remove the backhoe to access the hydraulic filter. If there is enough room it's gonna be a tight squeeze. It would be nice to know.

i changed the engine oil and filter at 50. Then at 100 i changed everything.

My 3016 has 2 hydro filters filtering the same fluid. I don't see any reason to change them at 50hrs.

I have a 1533 HST with about 90 hrs. I changed the oil and filter at 50 but nothing else. I think they say to do that encase something breaks they can get out of it by saying you were supposed to change it like the manual says. I have talked to some guys who have never changed the hydo fluid and have close to 500 hrs. I think I will change mine around the 150 mark.

I just had everything done at 52 hrs. Everything. yes i thought the book/manual was nuts for saying the filter and not the oil and then at 100 do the oil. i wanted everything serviced. esp when i have to have it trailerd around 60 miles each way. that is a serious cost. no truck and no access to a trailer anymore so ....

I just need to know if you can remove the filter without the oil draining out on a 1538 gear. Does anyone really know, Jambo, Dave?
Silly books don't say squat. I think this is probably the sorriest excuse for a service manual that I've ever seen.

I changed the filter and oil on both engine and hydraulics at my 50 hour service. Why cheap out to me it's worth changing I found some metal chips on the hydro plug magnet so I'm happy I flushed them out.

swap filters other than air at 50.. change engine oil.. leave hyd oil. plan a full service from that time each year unless your putting more than 200hours a year on the tractor.

I do at the first of the spring since that's right before I start using it heavy... kind of pointless servicing one before you put it up for the winter and just let it sit and gather moisture. Unless your main focus is the winter time

Unless you bought the service manual you got the operators manual..

just drop all your hyd equipment with loader on the ground and swap it fast either way... no reason you cant do it without loosing all the oil

I negotiated the so called service manual in my deal. It sure isn't much and I'm glad I didn't pay actual money for it. I have the factory service manuals for the truck I drive too. The service manual for the truck is actually useful. I think they should have to include this kind of info on a CD or something so everyone could have it instead of charging some ridiculous price for what you should have been given with whatever you had to pay so much for. If everyone asked for it when buying a new vehicle it would become standard practice soon enough. There isn't really much in the way of actual cost to the manufacturer. They need to have the info anyway and it's nothing to hit the print button and produce a PDF file. Actual cost of a service CD or thumb drive would run something less than a dollar given economies of scale.

To be honest I'm not sure if you can change just the filter and not make a mess. Maybe if you tip the tractor on its side far enough. I very rarely get a "50" service at 50 hours but I do get that question from customers who want to do the service them self's. If a customer asks I tell them to follow the chart but wait till 100 hr and do the Hyd oil and filter. When I'm doing first 50+ hr. service in shop. I do everything. Fluids and filters. 4WD axle. Air filter only if needed. That gets the services in sink and I have not had any service related issues. Best advice is to use common sense. :2cents:

Then I think I'll wait until 100 hours to change any of the hydraulic stuff when it makes sense to change both. I don't see the rationale of swapping the filter and not changing the oil. I remember car makers saying to change the oil and only changing the filter every other change but that never made any sense to me either. I always change both. Any other way is like taking a shower while wearing a raincoat.

if you do it at 50 you could clean out any metal or crud in there then instead for grinding all of the garbage in there for another 50 hrs. also the dealer i just am having it done said that failure to do the 50 hr service could mess up warranty issues with Mahindra. but not sure how they can prove it when people do it or do not do it themselves. maybe by oem parts vs. replacement parts/filters that is.

just a thought/comment. but hey - it's your tractor.

mine is only a max but **** it cost very hard earned and saved $ ----took me many years to get it and not about to trash it by skimping on the 50 hr service. Just me...

Ditto, I changed everything in my 5035 at 50 hours. There was a lot of crud on the sump screen, and glad to get that out of the system as soon as I did. Good time at that 50 hours to touchy feeley everything underneath and get to know your tractor real personal like... :)

I always shower with a rain coat on ! :umbrella-guy: I don't like getting wet. Seriously though, Try to use good judgment when doing your service. If your doing heavy work with your tractor and putting the spurs to it. Do the full service @ 50 hrs. fluids, filters, the whole 9 yrds even if it recommends just the filter not the fluid. If you just doing lite work you can fudge it a little. As far as Warranty goes. I will always back the customer, within reason, if a service issue would arise.

the 2 local yokels around here - 1 is not a good dealer and a part-timer re: sales and minimal service and Quality is down the tubes as well as their knowledge. the other people that have mice now seem quite legit though a long way away. However the one tech guy seemed to imply for a wheel seal that blwe due to natural stuff and not my running over stumps or trees or big saplings etc. like some people do - seemed to say 'depending on what i see when i open it up and who's fault it was....' well - that was a bit upsetting - however; so far i have been happy and they have expedited their service and repair. service done next day although it was a 3-4 week wait and also they did order the parts for the front wheel hydraulic leak. so - the good dealers out there should be cherished by the people that have them at their disposal. others like me just hope all will be fair with another dealer though outside the range of convenience and also the Mahindra Quality. I could right a large essay re: the kubota i looked at and the delaer that is 4-5 miles away as opposed to 60 for the mahindra. But I did my homework. Drove a tractor for 49 years but first one i ever owned. Chose mahindra.

When I did the complete change at 100 hrs, I found no evidence of any dirt, filings or anything but clean, brand new looking hydro fluid. The old stuff looked no different than the new stuff I put in. There was no sediment, nothing. In my case, just changing the 2 hydro filters would have been sufficient for another 100+ hours, I'm sure.

I guess you get to change two filters with HST tractors, my gear job only has the one. A penny saved is a penny earned.
