I wonder what oil viscosity I should use in my YM2000 engine?.......I don't remember who told me, but someone said use straight 30wt......I prefer the Shell Rotella T brand........I think that I'm going to put 15w40 in it though......Whats ya'lls opinions?

Thats what i've been running in my Mahindra going on 2 years now, (of course changing the oil regularly- every 150 hrs or so?)........So i'll stick with it for the Mahindra.

I have a friend (in his 70s?) that has a YM3000.......He's had it for 3 or 4 years now..........The only thing he uses in his tractor is Mobil 1 15w40 diesel grade oil........He says that Mobil is all that he'll ever put in his engines.........But as you know, everyone has their own preferences.

My owner's manual says to change the oil every 100 hours. Your Mahindra is a newer tractor though, maybe 150 hours between changes is fine. In a warmer climate like Louisianna would he be better off running straight SAE 30?

Like the old Quaker State ad said "Think months, not just miles". Depends on how long it takes to put 100 or 150 hrs. on your engine.

Mobil 1 is good oil, no doubt. I believe generally you see more hot-weather units such as tractors filled with straight 30w oil simply because it is what people have done over time. The earlier multigrade oils through extreme heat, dusty conditions & overuse, would lose their protective lubrication qualities faster than straight weight and they would assume their base component grade of protection (lower weight thus eliminating much protection at high temperatures or even operating tempertatures) - The additives and base for the multigrades has improved drastically and such that is no longer the case.
Also, no longer the case is that we use our tractors only during the hot warm growing season/haying months. SAE30 is good down to about 32F.

Multigrade is fine, but with the intense heat down here in LA, some old timers would still highly recommending you run straight 30w during the summer months, then switch to multigrade 10w30/15w40 in the winter months. (since we don't have a winter, I would say November through February if you want to be formal about it) - To be honest though, running the new high-quality multigrade 10w30 etc all of the time is fine, just remember again that multigrades have the propensity to break down in the intense summer heat and leave you with their base component hence very little protection, so be diligent with your changes!!!

I think I got cheated! My owners manual says to use 30wt, but is blank for the amount/capacity. Does not say anything there, that is why I was asking. I guess I will have to fill-in-the-blank when I figure it out for the first time.

Is your manual a MADLIBS version? Seems like Tom is right on, pour in a gallon, let settle, measure and adjust from there. Don't forget about 4WD maintenance.......

Fill it up , I have been changing oil for 50 years without ever knowing the capacity of anything.

... How much oil does it take to fill up after an oil change? What are your thoughts? ...

Don't mean to be flippant, but it'll probably take about as much to fill it up as comes out when you drain it - plus whatever is trapped in the oil filter.
