I am trying to replace the fuel lift pump in my '71 135 diesel, but the fuel lines will not come out of the pump. There seems to be a hard rubber seal around the end of the lines. What is the trick I am missing? Do I need to hand a dead chicken over my shop door? Thanks for any help on this one.

G'day cracker just give them a good pull they will come out make sure you fit new ones with the pump as they will most likely leak. Good luck

there are rubber ferrules on the lines. they have gotten hard as a rock over time and they are expanded into the threads where the line nuts thread into the pump. the lines are very tough to get out of the pump. you have no choice but to put enough pressure on them to remove em. the new ferrules will look much smaller and will be much softer. you might take a small sharp scribe or probe and stick it in the port beside the lines in several places and try to crack em around the line. good luck

I know exactly what you mean, I had to clean the fuel limp pump on my MF 175 in the autumn, As I was not replacing them I had a hard time to get it back in. If I recall correctly simultaneously pushed them in as I put the pump back, not doing them steps on at a time. But with new rubber it will probably be easier.

G,Day harold 8353.
I would say that it is more likely the injector pump that is the problem ,was the PAUSE there before the overhaul???.
To check the fuel lift pump remove the fuel line that goes from the secondary fuel filter to the rear connection on the injector pump and get someone to operate the lift pump hand primer you should get a good strong flow every stroke of the lift pump lever ,if not check the fuel filters first, if all is good with the fuel SUPPLY I would remove the injector pump and have it Bench tested .
Happy Days .

Upon reassembly, you will need to replace the neoprene seals, which are available at your MF dealer. These are called "olives" in the parts diagrams.
