12 States to ban diesel vehicles

Many years ago I read a book called "The Nine Nations Of North America" that addressed this. The author's premise is that North America (he included Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean in this) consists of 9 separate "nations" based on regional culture, often with little in common with each other. Other than Quebec and New England, none of them followed any present political boundaries. The maritime provinces of Canada were included in New England. All have a "capitol", a city the region relates to as being central to it. New York City and Washington DC weren't part of any "nation", but were city-states in themselves.
As someone who's traveled most of the U.S. on either business or personal road trips I can attest to a lot of what he wrote, something I'd picked up on without realizing it.
It was written in the late 70s/early 80s, so a lot of the examples used are a bit dated, but it's still worth a read. The author is Joel Garreau.
In 1988 I bought a book written by the International Green Party, telling what they were all about. At the time they were about shutting down the arms race and wanted to eliminate centralized government. Their plan included splitting up North America, much as you describe.

Like a dumbass I let somebody borrow it and never got it back.

It's always funny to me how these people think they will be the ones to survive/be in charge when society collapses. At some point, it will revert back to might makes right and the very people pushing this stuff will be begging for someone to save them.

I loaned out several books that never came back and still miss them… many were diesel and gas factory manuals…

The dealership went to digital and all the old stuff tossed… the diesel shop manuals totaled one.

I know who I loaned one of the books to as I was his Best Man…

His wife said they think they have it but with 2 relocations can’t say where.

I’d buy another copy but never been able to find it… scholastic book on home and farm water systems in great detail but very easy to read and illustrated…

The worst thing about loaning that book out is that someone who reads it might take it to heart. Yeah , at one point I wanted that too, except splitting the country up. The more I read and pay attention to what is really going on in the world, the less I think we hoominz are capable of doing it. We have meet the enemy and he is us. (Walt Kelly/Pogo).

I actually thought 2027 got rid of everything. That’s when I plan on my new 2027 Ram 7.2L Cummins 😁

Cummins B6.7 octane/7.2 diesel. Will these ever make it into the Ram trucks? The two appear to have similarities, both about 300 lbs more than the current 6.7 Cummins, both have engine brakes and overhead cams.

I would love to hear them without emissions and straight stacks on the "Jake":p

A pickup truck with Jakes would be pretty amazing….😁
I will say my 2-stage exhaust brake with transmission braking works very, very well.
My original 5 year old brakes were still at 50% in April-2025 with 60,000 miles on the odometer.
Cummins engines are heavy.

Pickup trucks with engine brakes? What could go wrong? For starters, there are already plenty of idiot CDL drivers making noise in situations where they do not need to. Using the brake to bring down the engine rpm's while shifting at 2am in residential neighborhoods comes to mind.

So nobody's allowed to have Jakes because of a few idiots?
Tend to agree with you reluctantly

I was under the impression that a jake brake was a compression release used on a two stroke engine. Worked excellent on my old dirt bike. Modern trucks have an exhaust brake on four stroke engines that works very well on my 2024 F350 without being too noisy. Don't think two stroke diesels have been used for years. Am I wrong????

They are used on most large displacement diesel engines, 2 and 4 stroke. Exhaust brake, mostly smaller diesel vehicles.

What comes to mind for me, are the Harley noise makers.

The new dodge diesels come with a Jake brake. At least our 2023 5500 service truck does.

I tested the braking with it off and then on, and it does make a difference.

The problem isn't the Jake. Rather, it's the idiots misusing them. There is no need to come up on a traffic light blipping the throttle with straight pipes, just to be obnoxious. Rather like the above mentioned Harleys.

Exactly.
I run a Mack Pinnacle at work with a Mack MP 8 engine.
Exhaust is so quiet you can barely hear the engine Jake brake.

No, just exhaust brake.

Its a real Jacobs brake?
I’d doubt it.

BTW: Cummins purchased the Jacobs Brake company

You're doubting correctly.

Rams have exhaust brakes, and quite effective ones, but that's entirely different from a Jake brake.
