Normally we use common 12-12-12 fertilizer for use around the garden. The last couple of times that I left an open container of the fertilizer in the pole barn I noticed that it looked like someone had poured motor oil on it when I went to use it. (wet & slimy) Does this fertilizer attract moisture in an open container? What is the best way to store open bags for use at a later time?

PineRidge,

I usually with anything like that have a storage container...small covered lid bucket that I keep the extra in. I know that in the past fertilizer I have had left over, actually got hard, so I stopped leaving it in its own container. For the safety of things, throw the empty bag in with it to identify it.

Nitrgen will suck moisture fast. I have a bag of 23 something something from last year and it was sealed. It has that oil thing all over it to. I remember the bulk nitrogen bins from when I worked in a fertilizer dept and you always had to break it up as it sucked moisture so much.

I would assume that if this is nothing more than moisture that it can still be used with good results, yes, no? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I'm still using mine. It looks like it is working anyway. The stuff I have coming up in my garden is good and green. And when I worked in the ferty plant many years ago we sure didn't throw it away from year to year.
