My Dad loves his. Says it can be too small for some things, but makes it work.

Your current Deere 870 is a compact tractor weighing 2,600 pounds bare tractor, with 12" ground clearance. Usual implement width is 60".

The Deere 1025 is a subcompact tractor weighing 1,450 pounds bare tractor with 8" ground clearance. Subcompact Deere 1025 may high-center in your two acre wood. Everything under the tractor is vulnerable to damage. Usual implement width is 48".

The Deere 1025 will be considerably less capable due to its lighter weight and lesser ground clearance. Your Deere 870 Three Point Hitch implements may or may not be compatible with the smaller dimensioned Three Point Hitch on a Deere 1025.

Will be used as backup mower.
General maintenance on ten acres.

As a backup mower the Deere 1025 may be entirely satisfactory.

Few T-B-N authors recommend subcompact category tractors for general maintenance on more than three (3) flat acres, usually less.

I would like into a 2 series. I was looking at the 1025r. Than ran across a 2720 used. Way more tractor and it would match the implements that you have.

I bought a 2025r a couple of years ago. You might look at one, like already mentioned a 1025r is smaller than what you have. A 2025r has the same loader as a 1025r but on a bigger chassis and bigger tires. They cost about $2000 more. The 1025r is a solid choice though.

Doesn't sound like enough tractor for 10 acres, I'd also prefer something with more ground clearance and real tractor tires.

If you have a specific need for that size tractor I’d agree the 1025r is the best in that category. If you are not size limited, then you can get way more tractor for your money. In my area I was quoted $600 more for a 1025r than a Bobcat CT2025 with the same implements, but larger. Far superior in every spec that matters.

Update on purchase, tractor arrived at dealer early December. Wrong tires, correct tires are scheduled to be delivered in march.
wanted lighter tractor than existing to avoid damage to grass. Plan to upgrade implements in future

You will like it. I have one and have a little over 11 acres. It's a backup mower and general chores. I don't have any major projects to do on my property at the moment, so nothing is too hard for it, it may just take a little longer since it has to take smaller bites. The only real negative is it takes FOREVER to mow the whole property. I have someone cut hay but he only takes 2 cuttings. So I mow it a few times after the last time so I don't have to look at tall grass all winter. I want to get something bigger just for that reason. I think I will eventually get an older big frame tractor and a 8' or so rotary cutter and keep the 1025R.

What do you plan to use a backhoe for?

There are a lot of TBN authors that know a great deal about tractors and I like reading their posts. No doubt they forgot more about tractors than I know. With that said, I don't necessarily agree that number of acres dictates tractor size. I would think it is what you are going to do on those acres and how many acres you are going to actually work.
When I was shopping for the first tractor three and a half years ago, I was looking at the L series for our 127 acre, four member, hunting camp. Camp land is mostly wooded with about 40 acres of thick brush. Other members wanted to get the BX, which we ended up with. I was somewhat disappointed at first.

Main use is to maintain trails through the woods by removing dead fall, bush hog other trails, grade trails with the BB to prevent erosion. and cut shooting lanes through the thick brush. It is no speed demon, but it gets the job done, and I have the time.

I was helping a neighbor out the other day and he had an L3901. Jumped on the L to help to move 14 dead ash that he cut down. Great machine, but if I had the L at the camp I would be limited because of its larger size. Would be harder to turn around on the wooded trails and hard to maneuver through the woods. Would also turn shooting lanes into runways.

OP, a lot of great advice given. Get the tractor that suits your intended use on your land.

Check out goodworkstractors.com on YouTube. He has several good videos on the 1025r and the upgrades he has done on his own tractor
