Interesting. Any idea as to the killing mechanism?

Diametceous earth - each granule is a razor sharp weapon. It will literally slice and dice anything that crawls on it or eats it.
The same principle for the food grade DE is that is will eliminate most parasites in a human when ingested as part of one diet. I.E. a table spoon or or so daily for no longer then a month.

PS when spreading it wear a mask. It is not healthy for our own lungs.

Malathion kills ants very well, but we don't have fire ants here. It's cheap so you could give it a try on a small area to see how it would work for you.

It may be a losing battle but I want to fight it anyway. How do I get rid of all these fire ant mounds? Is there an attachment that I can use on the 3pt to spread ant poison? Do they sell it in bulk at the Co/op? Do you even worry about it?

I've treated several mounds in my pasture. I spot spray the top of the mound till lightly moist. Use Termiticide/Taurus SC found at doityourselfpestcontrol.com. Nothing I've found works as good.

Google Ants and Diameteceous Earth and there is a wealth of info. DE is used for a lot of things including killing stuff in a non poisonous manner. Safe for pets that might ingest the result.

We have western thatching ants, similar but nowhere near as much of a problem. Small mounds that I just leave alone. The biggest bother to me is the aphid association they harvest and take onto my apple trees.

Place. Your weather is similarl to ours except ours is more extreme on both ends. I would think B Dahl would grow fine except if your pH isn't too low.

I was told that fire ants are foragers. That they need to go out beyond the mound to gather food and return to the mound with the food. So it best to broadcast the bait (AMDRO) all over the area not just around the mound.
