I have heard that for pricing standards, take 10-20% off JD's prices on their site and expect to pay that. Any dealers doing better than 20%?

try Mutton Power. You can look them up on the web. VERY good pricing.:D

If I sold at 20 percent off it be costing me money and I wouldn't have a job very long. John Deere has lowered there prices on the internet but not reduced what the dealers pay. Just reduced our margin basicly. On average we try to make 10% margin after all is said and done. Every dealer is different and some depending on the item there selling could carry a different dealer margin.

I've never seen Deere, or Kubota stuff around here sold anywhere 20% below list. It is much more common than popular belief to see it at 5%, than it is to see it at even 10% below list. Even at that, fuel prices have made delivery of small items more difficult.

Wow....without saying too much to protect the innocent, I guess I got a SMOKIN Good deal/Deal of the century on my Cabbed 3520....
Right place, right time....

If you review a few years of threads here on TBN, you will find claims that JD "raised their internet prices" and now it's JD "lowered their internet prices"....
I don't know --- but it's not even a relevant point in the search for a new tractor.

What a search here on TBN will also provide you with is a list of several criteria that is repeated over and over by many folk's who have bought and sold many, many tractors over the years.

One of the most often stated criteria is --- FIND A GOOD DEALER. Hopefully, it will be someone that is reasonably close to where you live. Service, parts and repair-warranty support is much more important that just finding the cheapest tractor available.

Another often repeated observation is --- THERE ARE REGIONAL PRICE DIFFERENCES. My experience gathering quotes has shown this to be true for JD at least. JD offers different financing incentives for regional markets and therefore the price the dealer can offer a machine for can be different depending upon where they are located and the current pricing policy that Deere has in place for that region.

However, competition is still a factor in the buying quest. So, get some quotes. Hit the Internet. Hit the phone.

Look at different colors...

If you get some numbers from a couple of dealers that are "in line" with what appears to be a competitive price range --- go with the folk's that are most likely gonna be there when you and your tractor need them.

Best of luck.

AKFish summed everything up pretty much as perfect as possible. I'd just like to add this:

"Quality (of the dealer) will be long remembered even after the intitial purchase price is long forgotten"

Spudland_Dave, I calculated mine at 10%, and i did try to get more off, but I hit the "hardline"

Around here, i found that getting eight percent off list was easy. Going beyond that you'd need to work a couple dealers against each other ....... which can be difficult if there aren't many within a reasonable driving distance.

I know that John Deere sells tractors on the PA State Commodities Contract for 25% off list pricing. This is for state, county, local government, etc. The last tractor I bought in S.E. PA I received 13.5% off list price.

In searching around the VT/NH area, seems 8% is common. However, one must consider the dealer...one of my big mistakes was buying my first tractor (Orange) based on price only...like it was a vehicle purchase. I paid the price later and learned a lesson or two about dealer support. Interestingly, I had also looked at the JDs at Mutton...nice friendly people with competitive prices. BUT...add up freight/delivery and factor in that it won't have loaded tires or welded hooks, and some custom options. I passed up my local JD dealer over $1,000 difference and regret not just going that route now. IMHO, most dealers have their margins set where they are profitable and can survive the business climate. I know my local JD dealer has grit under his finger nails, works long hours, and does not drive home in a BMW...I assume he gives the best deal he can and stands behind the deal after it's done. That's my experience, each region & dealer is a little different. Also, my JD was not the one sitting on the lot for 6 months...it was an order...and it came with loaded tires, welded hooks, and a host of extra effort to make me a happy customer. My local car dealer is another story. So, IMHO, shop around, but strongly consider the relationship you intend to have with your dealer...it may pay itself off over time. Hope this helps...

The price difference between what my local dealer was "able" to offer and the price that was quoted from the dealer 5,600 miles away was almost $6,000!!

I offered to buy local for a difference of $4,000. Therefore, I was willing to pay a price difference of $2,000 just to keep the deal close to home. Local dealer couldn't match the "outside" price even with an added $2K.

They understood that I couldn't afford to throw another $6K into the deal... Local dealer loyality can only go so far!

The local guys have been super friendly and very supportive since I've brought the tractor home. I buy all my filters and hydraulic oil, hoses and most of what I need for my tractor from them.

So, even if they didn't get that sale --- they know that I'm gonna be spendin' my tractor dollars with them on into the future. And who knows what I might be lookin' to buy in the coming years...

Long story - short. Give your local dealer a shot to compete for your deal. If he's in strikin' range of the OTD quotes from the other dealers; well, havin' local support is worth a little extra up front... And if you're straight up with him on the dollars and cents of the competing bids --- he'll understand full well if you don't buy from him.

I figure this is a good a place as any to make my first post. I recently found the site while shopping to replace my 35 year old Long!

I was just quoted 11% of List price on a JD 5103 MFD in the Memphis market area. This was the result of a cold start, walk-in off the street. So, it would stand to reason that there is some more pricing room available.

Now on to the question part. The 5xx3 series appear to have the same engine, but with different HP values. I would suspect that some enterprising technician could tune any of these models to a higher HP? Does anyone have info on this?

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Now I'm certain that I am not the first guy to think of the different HP ratings within an engine series. Somebody on here knows if a tune-up is possible in the 5x03 series.

Is it a different turbo-charger? Or different injectors?

I don't know many other ways of getting more HP from the identical Bore x Stroke. All the HP ratings are given at 2400 RPM.

I'd like to hear some opinions. Everybody's got one!:D

Adding a Howdy to AKfish. I was stationed up in Elmendorf from 1993-96 in the USAF. I've been back many times since. I miss that place!

If memory serves me correctly, I bought my 3720 about 20 months ago at 16% off list. Tractor was ordered and delivered in about 1 month. Other JD dealers had tractors sitting on their lots for several months but would only go about 10% off list.

I recently ordered a Case-ih Maxuum 125 Pro with 125 hp. The same engine displacement (411 cu in), turbo, injectors, ECU, fuel pump and high pressure injection system is used on the Maxxum 140 hp model and used in the next larger, Puma series which go up to 210 hp. Only in the larger and higher hp Puma series there are minor changes with a different piston part number and different radiator another row of cooling. The only difference otherwise is reprogramming of the ECU. Every increase in hp and reprogramming of the ECU will cost you $ but basically free revenue for the company. This is true with most brands (JD, NH, Agco, MF) within a model line unless some sizes have an entirely different engine.
Reprogramming the ECU can be done by the dealer but they require specific serial numbers and OK by company. Not worth the fraud for the dealer.

Aftermarket co. could attempt to reprogram the ECU but really to few tractors to make it profitable to develop. Lot more tuners in the automotive industry.

Now that is very interesting. I ordered a Case-IH Maxuum 125 PRO (125hp) and they have the module for that tractor which can increase hp by 15-30%. The next larger model in the same series with the exact same engine, transmission, pistons, turbo and fuel pump and injectors etc is the Maxuum140 PRO (140 hp). A 15% increase will get me about the 140 hp equivalent. Can anyone think of a reason not to add the module to my tractor? I won't be over powering the engineering since it is already designed for 140 hp. From the info they give in the PDFs, it seem the module fools the fuel pressure sensor on the high pressure common rail injection. Increase the pressure to get more power. I have read that the diesel pickups can have the fuel pressure on the common rail injectors increase up to 5X when service departments check for injector or fuel leaks by reprogramming the ECU.

Thanks for the replies Gentlemen. I knew there had to be a way.

The company in the link is focused on larger equipment than I am looking at though. It will take a little time and research to find somebody who works on the utility tractors.

AKfish. I'm guessing that with horse property, and a Brown bear problem, that you either live in the Mat-Su Valley or up around Fairbanks. Again, thanks for the info. It sure would be nice to get a 20% savings!
