Hi everyone I have a cub cadet model 1212 with a 21hp briggs that I had bought used 3 weeks ago. since the first cut it seemed ti spit and sputter and almost stall after making right hand turns, and sometimes whenever it felt like it. Today though as soon as I engaged the pto it died down right away. It had no power
and belched black smoke. I am assuming a fuel problem because of that and heard of the fuel pumps going bad. any help would be great thanks.

I think you may have more going on then the fuel pump! Normally when they die with a fuel pump problem it is from lack of fuel which wouldn't give you the black smoke unless you are getting oil into the engine.

It could be electrical, does it backfire from time to time when it shuts down and restarts?

Backfires on turns.

-safety switch grounding out?
-clogged jets/crap in float bowl/ float hanging?

Just make all left turns then. (kidding) I have heard of this problem on other machines. Typically is wiring with broken insulation rubbing against steering components or flopping just right against something metallic under the right conditions like turning a certain way.

Twins will start and run surprisingly smoothly on one cylinder. There will be some smoke from the fuel flowing unburned through the other cylinder. When you engage the pto the engine will die from the load it can't handle.

So, like others have said take a look at wiring to try to figure out the right turn phenomenon, but I'd also pull the plug wires and spark plugs, re-install and look to see that the wires are snapped onto the plugs completely. 2 years ago I had the 3204 running on one cylinder until I realized the plug wire wasn't pressed on.

Does this only do it while you are mowing?? If so, does your mower have an electric clutch?? If so check the bearings on the clutch. Also if could be your coil. I just had to change mine on my 2185. Every so often one of the coils would die, and it wouldn't send enough juice to the electric clutch to keep it fully engaged and the brake would drag, and it would really bog the motor down.

thanks for the help I'll check the wires, and I'm also going to clean the carb really good as well. The tractor hasn't backfired at all since I've had it just that pesky bogging down. It does have an electric PTO and I have heard a squeel every so often out of it. I was thinking that, that might have something to do with it. I guess I'll start with the easy stuff first. Also I'm not sure if I mentioned it in my first post but the tractor does run smooth until I engage the PTO. thanks again.

This is very similar to the problem that I had. Check all the bearings and idler wheels and pulleys on the deck. Check the electric clutch bearings. Maybe you have a coil going bad like I did. I had one bad so I changed both (on the 2185 you have to pull the motor to change the coil, or at least make it alot easier).
