Clifford, I believe you are correct. You would have to transfer the pulley, fan, and gear shift linkage from the old Transaxle. I am not sure what the R means. I am sure it is significant. It may mean reconditioned.

I did not price them but like most JD parts they are likely very expensive. Did you? I can destroy the transaxle if need be. I was hoping to salvage it to some day rebuild or have for parts.

Here is an update. I got the transaxle out of the machine and separated from the carrier. No need to remove the fenders. Everything was easy enough to get to from underneath. The king pin bolts came out with out much trouble using my impact. TomPlum was right..... I used a 1 1/8 6 pt. impact...

I think you have to actuate the drive lever on the transaxle. Also, you may have to bleed the air out. If you look on some of the Youtube video people put their drill or impact on the drive shaft and spin it fast for a minute or two to move the air out. Good choice in rebuilding
