trying to price a trailer before the auction

The discussion here has been very helpful to me. Now the auction company is showing bids and the high bid is already more than I believe the trailer to be worth. The trailer has no ramps, and they would add to the price. I would need the ramps for my skid steer. A private sale would not...

trying to price a trailer before the auction

These are all excellent posts. Thank you! I need to begin today preparing the wife for the amount I will have to bid. There is a buyer's fee, and I will have to ask about whether the local sales tax applies: Usually it doesn't apply to used equipment but a greedier city government cannot be...

trying to price a trailer before the auction

So a local auction house is going to offer a Load Trail two-axle trailer with a 14 foot dump bed. It is set up for a ball hitch. I would prefer a 5th wheel, and a pintle would be my second choice, but a good buy is more important. It's a 2014 model. No one can look at it yet, that viewing...

    It's Logging Season-Northeast

A question that can be important to the hobby logger or the farmer in his woodlot is whether to tree-length skid (or yard, or twitch, whatever) or log-length skid. If you're clear-cutting then falling so that all butts point toward the landing (or yard, or brough, whatever) is fine and dandy...

    Converting old thermostart to electric

At least for me and my Yanmar it takes counting to 20 for the battery to get the decompressed engine up to the maximum RPM. It's been too long since I looked at the operating manual so I cannot recall what it says. I do very much like the idea of getting the oil going before I add fuel to...

    Converting old thermostart to electric

I've had a 1982 165d for about 25 years in a N. Pacific coastal climate that sometimes sees zero degrees F, or a little colder. The thermostart device worked the one time I tried it, but a block heater and a hair dryer seem to work too so that is what I use. I count to 20 using the...

Tractor rear PTO vs skidsteer snowblower

I have long had a Yanmar compact tractor, and I have regularly plowed driveways with it. About 18 months ago I bought a Bobcat skid steer, a 2008 model with 250 hours, that had only been used to plow the shared driveway that I now plow, so it's pretty much like new. Rear visibility in the...

This is from Australia...always let somebody know where you are going and when you expect to be back

The Wall St. Journal today has a story about how the current version of the IPhone 14 brings with it a satellite texting function for emergencies. Unlike the Garmin and other devices people carry in the woods where I live the IPhone carries no monthly fee for having that satellite capability...

    Skid steer back-up camera

No snow to plow as yet but I did a test run on the part of the driveway that is too steep to go up frontwards in the S185 without weight in the bucket according to the manual. When I do drive up this slope empty the front end is light and feels likely to flip. As I had hoped the camera...

    Frustrating but simple problem

I bought the hoses at discount hose, as recommended here, and am very pleased with every aspect of the transaction.

    Skid steer back-up camera

In the 1.5 years I've owned my Bobcat S 185 skidsteer I have put on about 63 hours plowing our driveway, which has 3 houses. Rear visibility is very poor, and I plow in the dark most often. The bottom of the driveway goes along high tide, and the upper end meets a state highway. I plow up...

    Frustrating but simple problem

I've begun doing this with cans of WD-40 and other chemicals. I use a valve from a tire. When I buy wheel weights for casting bullets the can of wheel weights usually has at least one tire valve. Five seconds at 50 pounds pressure usually does the trick. I wear gloves and a face shield...

    Frustrating but simple problem

It's a 1/4 NPT male fitting that screws into the fitment on the hydraulic cylinder. That male fitting takes a 9/16 wrench or socket. Both of these Yanmar implements, the backhoe and the front-end loader are SAE. The tractor itself is metric. The manuals that are for the implements are...

    Frustrating but simple problem

Thanks for the replies. I used heat with an electric heat gun but should try a torch. The Yanmar book for the BH just calls for 10-40 motor oil for the hydraulics, and I am sure there is some residual in the cylinder so I need to be careful with flame. I have pipe wrenches, including a...

    Frustrating but simple problem

I have had a US Yanmar 165D for many years. It's first owner, a municipal government, always left it outdoors in this rainforest next to the Pacific Ocean, but it wasn't a rust bucket when I bought it. I have never left it outside (15 years now), and now that it is 40 years old it doesn't...

    Welcome to 2022

So bought a specific used Bobcat skid steer about 15 months ago after advice received here at TBN so far as pricing. However, price paid was the one the local dealer told the seller she should ask, and I really owed the seller for the years she and her late husband helped with chores around...

Napa Gold 1334 oil filters have changed....

This is disappointing news. I have used NAPA Gold and Wix filters interchangeably for decades. The difference in the guts of a cheap oil filter and the best filter is astonishing. The cheap ones look like a roll of toilet paper has been put in a metal cylinder.

T770 How to lower boom to exit dead machine?

My S185 has a red plastic square knob on the flat surface on the right hand side of the seat. Pulling that knob out about 1/4 inch and turning clockwise (I think, it's on the knob which way it turns) will lower the lift arms so the door can be opened and the cab exited. It's pretty foolproof.

    Clarkson’s Farm

I thought his housekeeper is certainly a likely and lively accessory. Wouldn't want her to lose much weight though, especially as winter is coming on.

Pulling someone out of ditch with skid steer

As Gee Ray suggested, the rear corners on my S185 each have a tie down bracket made of 1/4 inch steel. I has painted them last summer but if I noticed them I sure didn't remember them. The brackets aren't made for a sideways pull but might do in a pinch. Visibility is so poor looking...

Pulling someone out of ditch with skid steer

Purchased a 2008 S 185 Bobcat skid steer at beginning of year from widow of fellow who had used the machine since new to plow shared driveway for houses for which my home is one. Paid more than advised on this forum but local dealer gave widow a written appraisal and I could not very well...

Best firearm for home protection? I realize a lot is personal choice involved?

I cannot recommend reloading too highly. I'll admit that my natural hoarding tendencies and my Saturday mornings addiction to moving sales have helped me avoid the current price panic. A pound of powder gives me about 1,400 rounds of 45 auto. My bullets are cast from lead I scrounge for free...

    Canvas hydraulic hose covers

About 4 or 5 weeks ago after seeking price information here I purchased a 2008 S 185 with 250 hours. I knew the machine since new since it had only been used in plowing snow in a shared driveway that includes my own residence. The machine had always been stored out of doors until I bought it...

    pricing advice please

Looking at a 2012 Bobcat S 185 skid steer on wheels. Private sale. I know the machine. Dealer maintained. One owner since new. 250 hours total. Has enclosed cab. Used just about exclusively to plow snow. Always stored outside, and shows it, but otherwise looks good. Always has been used...

    mail-order made-up hydraulic hoses

I live in a town that cannot be reached by road. Most home items are purchased by mail-order. Looking at the hoses on the FEL and BH on my compact tractor it seems to be a good time to replace all 26 hoses. All are 1/4 or 3/8 NPT. Lengths are up to 108 inches. Does anyone have experience...

    Two questions, please

Long-time TractorByNet user regarding compact tractors but haven't used a skid steer in decades (since the time when Bobcat meant skid steer). Will be using an S 185 on wheels with chains for snow removal. Is there an operator manual I can download? Second question; machine may be for sale at...

Tires  So what did I do wrong?

Needed new front tires for my 165d. Current (probably original) tires are Goodyear 6-12, ag tread. I live where mail-order is the only option, and cannot drive out of here - air or water only. Ordered two Carlisle 6-12 ag tread tires. One just arrived. It looks too small in rim diameter...

Roll Bar - ROPS - question

I have a 1982 Model 165d. It was delivered to the original owner with a frame-mounted backhoe and no roll bar, and that backhoe has never been removed. There was no roll bar when I purchased the tractor from the original owner. I live in a city that cannot be reached by road and therefore...
