Dang Vermin! Stole all the plums! Grrr....

Had the same problem here with the 'coons and plums. I bought a 3' section of cheap single wall stove pipe to place around the trunk, zip tied it on and saved the fruit. Now, last week I'm mowing grass and notice a coyote under my pear trees. Minutes later the coyote is jumping several feet in...

    New battery not starting tractor

Massey Ferguson 451: Back story: I had ran out of fuel in the woods and upon refueling, I ran the battery dead attempting to start the engine. I got my Shumacher 1000 amp jump starter to kick her off and drove back home. I charged the battery overnight, all seemed fine until my next attempt to...

    Marvel Mystery Oil

I've refinished several old (c.1880s) cast iron farm bells and used MMO to coat the cast iron pieces afterwards to inhibit rust. It works great. Just re-coat every 2-3 years.

    Air compressor quit

Bought used a couple years ago, my Porter Cable 24gal air compressor decides to quit working. I know little about air compressors but can fix most things if I am told what I need and what to do. Power is good, but makes only a humming sound when powered on. I have confirmed it is not an...

JD 4300 quits when going uphill.

I had the same issue, not just when going uphill, but anytime I had higher RPMs and heavy PTO use such as with the bushhog. I had a small piece(s) of plastic floating in the tank which would pull towards the fuel intake and shut her down. O belive the plastic came from a busted fuel level ball...

Fuel and water temp gauge not working.

On my Massey 451, the fuel gauge and water temp gauge are not operating. When I crank the tractor they both move only slightly from the far left position, like a hair or about 1/16". Not much. Doesn't appear to be a fuse, all my fuses look fine. Ideas?

Can't remove PTO shaft from auger's gear shaft

I bought a used Greenline EM5000 auger. I need to remove the attached PTO shaft (the tractor end quick attach is bad, needs replacing) and I cannot remove the the PTO shaft from the auger head's gear drive. The PTO shaft on the implement end is a female smooth end 1-1/4, fitting on to the...

Is this the world's fastest growing flower?

And this I took on my farm this past weekend... Two things in the south to pinpoint old home place spots... yellow/orange day lillies and spider lillies. If you find those blooming, there used to be a house there.

Is this the world's fastest growing flower?

Nope, those are what we call Spider Lillies in the south. Notice the difference in the color and petal. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lycoris_%28plant%29

    Freakin lime!!??!!

Ditto this... Additionally, you're not planting for optimal crop harvest, you're planting to attract deer. I have open fields ranging from 15 acres to 1/2 acre. About five fields range from the 1/4 acre to three acres. I plant only those smaller fields for winter deer feeding. Deer like the...

    Metal Building Lighting?

In the main barn, I installed three two bulb 8' florescent fixtures. Two more on the side wing where will clean deer, and another in a walled locked up area. So far this is enough light, but we can easily add two more fixtures in the main area when needed.

What do I do for my barn door?

So any ideas for lighting I should put in here? Right now, I can't imagine needing lighting many hours a year except in the fall and winter late in the day, but at the same time, I do like planning for the future rather than being limited. Updated pictures. Overall barn inside and out. Left...

What do I do for my barn door?

Lighting in the barn One of the next projects will be get some nighttime lighting in the barn. I am looking for suggestions, and less cost is better. I'd rather go with LED or something more cost efficient (although honestly we won't be running the lights that much), but just as important is...

What do I do for my barn door?

So I've completed the front corner 16'x20' lockup area, with two swinging doors and one interior 4x6 door (re-purposed from my poultry houses). The outside tin came from the poultry houses, as well as most of the 2x4 and 2x6 interior lumber. All good here.

    Rotary Cutter  Bent PTO shaft

On my 6' bushhog rotary cutter, I must have raised the cutter to high with the 3pt lift slightly bending the PTO shaft... it just won't slide off like it should. I assume this because I can't get the tractor end of the PTO shaft removed from the PTO spline (has the quick disconnect push pin)...

    First Snake of the year

Sorry, not the first snake of this year, but a picture of the last snakes killed last fall. A guy helping me around the barn picked up piece of tin laying on the ground, and this mama rattler and her 15-18" babies were all underneath. We won.

    Wasps in the attic

Last fall, we put off several of the "bombs" in the hunting cabin, and then three more in the attic entrance. First time, we found thousands of wasps on the dead on the floor. Next time, alot less, still some though. I can't easily get UP into the attic to the actual nests. We've had a pretty...

    Poultry Houses coming down!

This week's progress: You'll see the green strips in the pictures hanging down like some St. Patrick's day parade had just passed through...those are plastic strips which hold in the cellulose ceiling insulation above, which is a loose paper-like substance treated to be less flammable. The...

    Banded pigeon found

Last week at the farm, I found this dead pigeon under the barn and was about to toss it off in the woods when I noticed the bands on the legs. Poultry Houses coming down!

Some of you may have been following some of my projects, one of which was to sell off all the equipment in these poultry houses, and have them taken down to the clay pads. Well, it's underway. I didn't have metal trusses in these three 40'x500' houses, so I'm not getting the best $$s from the...

Good neighbor / Loading the 90kw generator

When I recently bought the property adjoining my current farm, along with it came three huge 40x500 poultry houses, and a 90kw John Deere/MagnaPlus generator, circa 1999. I've sold off all of the poultry equipment, feeders, waterers, pumps, lines, etc., and the generators was one thing...

What do I do for my barn door?

Here's the background: Bought this property recently with an existing poultry farm on it (three 40x500 broiler houses, one 1350 sq ft farm house (my great aunt's built in the 1920s and moved to this location abt 1999) and one 70'x72' steel truss barn, used as the dry stack for the poultry...

    Hunting Cabin heating

Haha, I am only demoing the poultry houses (20,000 sq ft each), I don't need that space! But, a couple of friends have said to me I should keep at least one, "you never know". I can't imagine myself needing 20,000 sq ft of storage space. My son says one would make a great shooting range. No...

    Hunting Cabin heating

Thanks all! So, for now, I've gotten less-expensive quartz heaters to plug into the 110 outlet, $70 each. One window AC unit I found on Craigslist which a friend of mine actually had listed, $50. I will get another window unit probably this spring, as I find another 'special'. As we see we're...

    Hunting Cabin heating

Hey all... currently doing a lite renovation on a 1920's farm house. Currently only bringing it up to snuff for myself, son and friends as a hunting cabin. Barn Cat?

Thanks for all the advice... thinking on it. I don't like snakes (found 15 rattlers under a piece of tin this summer during a cleanup) and have bush-hogged a couple other rattlers. The non-venomous good snakes, I don't mind. The property has an old farm house on it, as well, I am turning into...

    Barn Cat?

What's the advice on keeping a barn cat on a property where I am NOT there but every 7-14 days... needed for the obvious reasons, to keep away mice, snakes, varmits, etc. Is it reasonable to expect I could keep a cat that way, fed with some automatic feeder, water, etc? If an automatic feeder...

    Greetings!

Just dropping by to introduce myself. I own a Massey Ferguson 231, inherited from my father along with the farm/acreage I grew up on in South Alabama. I enjoy taking care of the place, enjoy my time on the tractor, or course! And I hate those days when mechanics get in the way of bush hogging...
