Red Dyed Diesel

Only thing I will add is make sure you get the off road fuel from a source that has a good turn over. My neighbor got after me for using on road fuel and paying the tax and told me to get the off road at the local co-op. Well I tried it and ended up getting a nice case of the diesel slime sometimes called algae in my tractor fuel tank and storage cans. Took a lot of effort to get rid of it so now I again buy the on road at the local truck stop, for the amount of diesel I use the few cents of tax saving is not worth the aggravation of dealing with the contaminated fuel.

Just saying be sure of the fuel you purchase, sometimes saving a few cents ain't worth it.

We agree with everything posted above, same fuel with different identifier dyes, except our experience with tractors coming in with fuel problems shows the following:

1. In northern climates, fuel station diesel has anti-gel treatments added sometime round late September. You may purchase off road diesel that has not yet been treated. You can/should also treat with anti-gel additives. We froze 3 different samples, the Power Service "White Bottle" using the "below 0 degrees" formula worked best.
2. Many arguments about shelf life of Diesel Fuel. Our experience is about 3 Months. Not that the combustion properties of diesel brakes down in 3 months, but because of the organics in diesel. Any moisture or condensation in the diesel can start the growth of "algae". Not the green stuff, it is usually dark brown to black, or sometimes a bright yellow. Causes hell with fuel systems, especially Tier IV Engines.
3. Over the road, or fuel station diesel, get's turned over much quicker that off-road. Good chance of getting fresher diesel at the fuel station.

Just our experience, some may have different opinions and experiences, these are ours. Pay a little extra and assure you get fresh diesel.
No difference. (20+ years professional experience in motor fuels)

Hello,
................snip............... I have recently been approved for a Red dyed diesel permit here in Texas. Off road use only. ..................snip.................
Permit - are you serious?

I just pull up to off road Diesel pump at a local station and fill up my drum, or portable tank.

A number of years ago a convenience store on the Reading side of Ephrata had an ORD dispenser. We had company meetings just past that and I'd take my diesel jugs along and fill them. Don't know if they still have it or not. I now get a supplier to deliver it. They don't mind doing 150 gallons, but I don't believe they do 55 gallon deliveries. They normally do algaecide but may or may not do antigel so I ask when ordering and handle it myself if needed.

I got ORD for a while at a local oil supplier. I don't use that much, so just filled up a couple of cans from their pump a few times a year. Then I found that their pump price for ORD was more than the service stations were charging for un-dyed fuel, so switched to that.

I use the Red ORD, only thing it does different than on road is turn your filters pink!

I buy from the local farm co-op where all the farmers buy from, or get delivered from ... Without looking it up, it's about 30 cents a gallon cheaper than the on road they also sell ...

No permit needed in Missouri, just swipe your cc.

Honestly…i used to wire up service stations and fuel depots. The red dyed and the regular diesel come out of same tank. They have an inline tank and pump to add the dye as its used. Im sure some older stations may have separate buried red diesel tanks, but unsure about this. Service stations keep having to replace tanks after so many years.
