16 hours on my 1046 and the PTO was operating normally. While mowing, it disengaged, clicked a few times when I tried to re-engage it. Then it stopped the clicks and now nothing happens. Is there a relay, fuse, etc. that might be bad? I noticed a while back, when replacing the deck belt, that the PTO was warm, not touching it but just having my hand near it. Is this usual? Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Try this, thump the relay that is taped to a fuse by your right knee while sitting in the seat, I had to do this on my 1042 while waiting to get to a parts store. I replaced the mini relay, and havent had a problem.

The PTO clutch is an electromagnet, and the coil will get warm when it is engaged. Don't forget to check the dreaded safety switches if the relay or fuse are OK.

Found the problem, I think. The spring that goes to the idler pulley is broken and allows the pulley to go foreward and butt up against the other pulley. This is the rear spring. Now if only I can find a replacement-since I live in the boonies far from any dealer. I don't know if this is a covered by warranty or not since it looks expensive.
