My yanmar 2310D pto is free in first selector will not move the linkage to any other position. So it stays engaged all of the time. I have sprayed it with penetrating oil and tried to rock linkage free but no joy. Does anyone have any suggestions? Would be greatly appreciated!

Not sure what you mean by ‘free’. Anyway, I would remove the linkage from the lever to make sure the lever is not bound, then you’ll know for sure if your problem is internal.
My control lever became very heavy from non usage and seemed stuck at times. The pin securing my control lever was bound and the lever was difficult to move, not the linkage.

I have a YM2310. The PTO linkage was stuck when I bought it. The problem was that the shaft that the linkage rotates on had rusted and seized to the linkage. I used penetrating oil and waited. Then more oil. Then I used Vise Grips on the end of the shaft and attempted to rotate it. After several attempts it finally moved. This was after a couple weeks trying. Anyway, after it started to rotate I unscrewed it from the transmission, cleaned it up, added zerk fittings to the linkage and all is well now. It certainly took some patience but it works great now. BTW, after I got everything freed up I found that I kept hitting the PTO lever with my left foot. This would shift the PTO into a higher speed range from the neutral setting of the lever. So I made a block from plastic that fills the leftmost bottom slot of the PTO shifting gate. This prevents me from accidentally engaging the PTO.

There's a Roll pin in the shifter fork RP-625 and the Shift fork 1-3 gear SF-13. The Shifter arm has a pin also. I'm showing SL-4730 shift lever. My guess worst case scenario if it did break something. A shift lever on my Ford. Twice! When I bought it I new clutch was stuck etc. and then I scrubbed Rev. going into a gear 4th and broke the lever. Rust and then shear a pin on a Yanmar shifter is common esp. the Rice patty models.

It's easy to check if the linkage is stuck. There are two links from the shifting mechanism to the transmission. These can be easily disconnected by just removing a cotter pin. Once disconnected try to move the shifter. If it will not move then it is rusted in place. As a further check try to move the shafts that go into the transmission. If they rotate then the transmission is probably fine. The whole job of checking should take less than 10 minutes. If rust is the problem then leave the links disconnected. Use penetrating oil and maybe heat on the shifting mechanism. Use the shifter handle to try to move things. Be patient. Work it up and down. Once it starts to move then change the handle to the other position and work things there. Eventually you should be able to unscrew the mounting shaft from the transmission. Then you can clean off the rust and grease things up. The shaft is the only part that rusts, the shifter mechanism has bronze bushings. I have a machine shop and so was able to add 3 zerk fittings on my shifter mechanism.

Weld it if it's not one of the pins. Your going to need a good machine shop if not. Parts on a 2310 is highly doubtful.
