I got 20 lbs of plain black oil seeds from Hoss Tools and was pleased. A pound goes a loonngg way. Very good people.

Watch for sales and buy bird seed. We just bought a 40 lbs bag for $14.99 of black oil. Going to also buy a bag of black stripe sunflower seeds to mix in. Be aware if deer eat the black stripe sunflower the plant is done but black oil will continue to grow and produce multiple heads. Some can get pretty freaky looking. The first time we did sunflowers I purchased from a seed dealer with the rest of my supplies and was very disappointed in how much trash was in the seeds. Bird seed is cleaner.

I buy them from tractor supply black oil sunflowers. They don't get real tall but the critters love em.

Not an item I typically see on sale, certainly never that cheap. Think I paid $25 a couple weeks ago at TSC. They're a little cheaper at OSJL but they're not very convenient. Haven't seen them under $20 or so in many years.

When is it best to plant Sunflower in the SW? The Gambrel Quail love them. It's a good source of fat

I always planted mine in pots and transplanted (until I found out they don't like that) and the Canadian Blue Jays got fat on them. These seeds came from a wedding. I've since grown Mamouth Grey that only grew 6' tops.

If your just field planting branching sunflowers ya the bird seed varieties already mentioned work good.

I plant 1000s but for vase cuttings been doing it for years. Most of those types are different, single stem varieties. I just ordered my new seed for the 2026 season.

Deer have been seriously damaging last 2 seasons for me.
