Some scam emails get you to respond and confirm that is your active phone #. That can enable them to hack your phone and obtain personal information.
Another way your personal information is obtained is by QR codes. They are a request to your phone to seamlessly provide requested information.

excellent point - lucky for me, it was a joke posting I came up with just after I'd decided not to make my splitter (and my back) suffer through trying to split an oak crotch "round" and noodled it instead

The vast majority of the seemingly innocent "how are you?" type texts are simply the introduction prior to the various low tech send me money scams.
One thing is certain.... Respond and you will be contacted again.

I told my wife that I didn't want to make her insecure, but I have a hot young babe that's interested in me. She thinks my name is Mike, but I think we can get past that.

I recieved two texts in succession from different numbers, each simply stating
"Please remove your clutter from in front of my house ASAP."

I assumed it was some type of scam so deleted it...after checking my personal phone to make sure I hadn't sent it to myself. :D

Had one the other day asking me if I wanted some Spicy Ramen.
I just deleted it and later that evening they sent another saying that at least I could answer them.

I do in fact want spicy ramen now that you mention it.
Not with the sender of a random text though.

I must have done something, I started getting emails, all scam/spam. I found that if I open email to see who it is, I continue getting them, and more. If I delete without opening, after a few weeks, they stop. I never click on any links, but just opening an email seems to keep it going.

Have had same celly number for 20+ years.
One time I responded to a “lucrative offer” on financing texted to me. From that day forward, I’ve received 20+ offers per day, every day for years from 8AM to 9PM every day. They are all AI generated

Yes, I block every number, but like a zombie apocalypse, they keep coming, with no end in sight. I have probably blocked well over 1,000 numbers.

It has ruined my cell phone ownership experience. I set my phone to ring only when numbers it recognizes call me. The rest go to VM. But the messages they leave still need to be blocked & erased or my VM fills up quickly.

Don’t ever respond to any solicitations texted to you. It puts you on a call list shared by what seems like thousands of solicitors. And thry they will never stop calling you. They have thousands of numbers to call you from..

Anyone who had email in the mid-1990's can remember just how bad spam email got, at it's peak. I'd guess I got several hundred per day, ca. 1996 - 2000. But then server-side spam filtering became the norm, and actually started getting very good throughout the early 2010's. Now, despite thousands of times more users online than back then, I only get a few spam emails per day.

I suspect we will go thru the same arc with cell phones, and in fact I think we're already over the hump, I probably get less today than two years ago. The only trouble is that, even if phone companies have better AI to identify spammers today, versus the old static points systems applied to email 20 years ago, people will be less forgiving of falsely-flagged phone calls and texts.

Besides that, can you imagine grandma managing SMS spam filter settings on her iPhone? :ROFLMAO:

I've gotten a couple of wierd texts recently on my company cell. The first two in rapid succession from different numbers said "Remove your clutter from in front of my house ASAP. The second, a couple of weeks later asked if I had blocked them.

I did just that, 2 seconds later.
