Well, that would only need to go wrong once.

Understood, and agreed.

Other than a training-run, I'd only do it under Emergency conditions (no choice, except zero AC voltage).

^ Really bad idea, for someone who has a habit of abusing ratchets normally.....

Working on my buddy’s portable generator. Recoil spring broke. His kid took it apart and got a new spring. Wrong one! Trying to source one locally so I can have it back together for the upcoming storm. 8 hp Briggs flat head.

Can you repair the spring by heating it and reforming the end?
Was quite common with old Briggs to reform the end with a grinding wheel.
Yesterday I repaired my air hose rewind spring by heating it and folding it over to form a hook on the end.
Just a suggestion!

Good luck racer.... only needed a Briggs carb-kit so far, but I highly value the small-engine counter @ my local hardware store - rare today.

Never had to fix (knock wood), interesting point 90.... I probably wouldn't have guessed that malleable....

Spring steel is certainly malleable but you first need to heat it up to reddish glow...

Cheers

I picked a spring up locally last night for $13. Wound it in and put the rope back in. All fixed. Dropped the fan shroud/starter assembly off at my buddy’s house. Just in time for the storm

miserable weather coming in this weekend, so going to run my portable gen today.
Running on a 40 pounder with a 30 as backup.
at least I can revert back to gasoline which for five years has never touched the tank.

Most of snow coming down during the day on Sunday. Dealing with portable gens in the middle
of the night while snowing or raining sure isn't fun.

Same setup as me 'cept main is 30lb and two 20's for backup gasoline as a last resort but it's nice to have that option if necessary.

Glanced @ the Jetstream map last night.... it's pushing a lot of cold arctic air way down South..... at least that dense air helps carb'd engines, once running !

Rain, snow, portables.....not fun, and I hate getting moisture in during refueling. Many commercial tarp shelters don't last long up here (snow load), and eventually succumb to sun/wind even with no snow.

Other than building a gen-shed from scratch..... modding a small sea-can seems like the fastest way to get a rugged shelter in place for gens..... I'm thinking that's what one of my neighbours is doing with his..... hard to tell, as he talks with NOBODY...... Witness Protection maybe

Haven't seen the news lately (usually don't) but heard some hams on radio last night talking about how cleaned out many USA grocery stores are.... hoping everybody is well-stocked, food, fuel, meds, and it doesn't take long to clear snow when it hits....

once I got the snow off from last week (oops) charged up the battery with my 5A battery tender,
started up pretty quickly, 247 volts no load and ran it for five minutes.
currently on a 40 that shows half a tank and I have two full 30's to back it up.
But once the 40 goes out, I usually run that to Tractor Supply as soon as I can to get it filled.

since the middle half of this storm is supposed to be ice or frozen rain, not looking good for power outages,
likely will have a lot of trees down.

as long as power doesn't go out in the middle of the night, fine.

I tried firing up my portable generator yesterday. It wouldn’t start. Not even smelling fuel.

Haven’t used it in at least 12 years. Hopefully I can get to it tomorrow. Had a funeral today, and had to take the kids to school and pick them up. So not much got done.

Most likely I won’t need it. It’s what I used to use before I got the standby generator.

But it bothers me that it won’t start.

You are good with your other one, and I'm sure you'll have your original sorted soon (y)

Pulled my genie twice the other day and it started up. Haven't needed it since 2023, but run it regularly and put fresh tested fuel in it this fall.

I always keep a couple weeks of food and fuel around, and about 10 years of ammo, bourbon and cigars
