I consider myself rural the closest grocery store or gas is over 10 miles.
I have 3 neighbors close by but next side road is a few miles away and I live on 40 acres.

I think in north MS to be considered as rural living would be how far are you from a Walmart, for me its a 40 mile round trip.

I would say consider the man with no teeth...

If he's embarrassed and feels like he needs to fix them, probably in the city.
If he's not embarrassed about them by people when he's out - Rural
If there's nobody around when he's out - Country

I live "rural". There is a small town also 10 miles away where you can get the basics. For a "shopping" trip most people drive to Reno (350 mile round trip) or Salt Lake City (720 round trip). Those are the nearest cities of any size.

Then there's the ranches around here, some of which are 100 and more miles from the aforementioned small town. Their school-aged kids are boarded with someone in town so they can attend school.

Rural means to me that you do not live in a Town or City. Different than remote rural where neighbors are miles away. Different than wilderness where access is limited. You might live in an enclave of several homes of like minded folks, or related, like the Amish or on isolated acreage.

With 10 miles to the nearest village and about 75 to Walmart, it's fairly rural here.

FedEx and/or UPS shows up almost daily, so it doesn't really matter how far away any stores are. For a Costco run it's a 325 mile roundtrip.

I figure you ought to be able to pee off your front porch
About the only person who might take issue with that would be Mrs. Oak, though in the spring/early summer she does ask me to do so around some her flower beds to discourage the deer from eating them. :ROFLMAO:

But it sure makes the weeds and grass grow faster.

We live on the outskirts of town . If we hear gunfire to our west, it's target practice, the skeet club, or someone hunting. If we hear gunfire to our east, it's South Bend and you'll hear sirens shortly.

There are horses a block over and we see cowboys riding through the neighborhood, but that word right there, 'neighborhood' kinda kills any sense of the word 'rural'.

We have land about 9 miles outside of town. Two houses across the street. Next houses are 1/4 mile away. Corn fields and woods. Maybe 3-4 houses per square mile. I'd consider that rural.

My rural, 5 miles to gas/convenience store, 18 miles to grocery store/highway. You are your own 911 for at least the first 20 minutes minimum. Police more like 45 minimum.

Im about 3 minutes to a gas station, 8 minutes to Dollar General, and probably 6 fast food places within 10 minutes; but 30-35 to walmart/home depot, ect. Yes, private dirt road, accessing a out 50 lots or so, all over 5 acres, some upwards of 40 acres. I would call it rural, but not by any means, way out.

What i find funny, is the disconnect on rural, with many mid west rural folks on here saying "low crime" and peaceful. Im southern rural, so high crime, high drug use, high violence (per capita), lots of poverty; not equestrian rural, if that makes sense.

At the same time, not Alaska/Wyoming or even Texas rural; or even middle Georgia rural, where everything is 40 miles away.

As far as rural services; we get trash pick up in my county, but your not gonna get someone to come out over litter or stray dogs.

Rural living refers to life in areas outside of towns and cities, characterized by low population density, open spaces, and often a strong connection to agriculture and nature. It typically offers a slower pace of life, close-knit communities, and opportunities for outdoor activities

I think the above description covers what I consider Rural. I have 4 acres that is part of a 20 acre open parcel. Most of the neighbors have 3 acres or more. 1/2 a mile away there are several 50 acre fields that a used for various crops.
I live in the township. Village is 6 miles away. Walmart and TSC is 2.5 miles away. Menards is 5 miles away.
When I moved here 53 years ago I could only see 2 other houses. Today I can see about 10 houses from my front yard.
Nobody can hear me call my dog to come back into house.
Have a hospital with ER and all other types of care 6 miles away.
Have cable/Internet, natural gas, and plenty of electrical power.
Most of the people that go to Walmart and other big stores 2.5 miles from my place. Have no idea that my little rural community is here.

It's the kinda place where the shots are 90% target or hunting, but could be a domestic or a dope deal gone sideways. Your neighbor doesn't call about your shed and its permits, and you dont call about the guys selling weed down at the corner.

Shortly after my wife and I moved to our place, I was sitting on the front porch one summer morning, enjoying my coffee. When my wife woke up, she came out and sat with me a while, and she was wearing nothing but a large t-shirt.

She noticed a weed that bugged her in the flower bed, so she pulled it out. She then noticed more, and she ended up on her hands and knees for a while pulling weeds.

Her bare a$$ was sticking out behind her, and I thought, "I love it here." That's rural living to me.

I consider my place rural.

10 miles to gas/connivence store. 12 miles to Dollar General and church. 25 miles to Walmart and 28 miles to Meijer.

2 miles to closest neighbor that lives here year round.

I can shoot anytime I want and not be concerned about neighbors.
