That is such a cool pic. Great, classic '80's dirt bike and the old shacks. Do you know any of the history of those shacks?

Only that it was an old mining camp. That pic was taken in 1982; I was back there a month or so ago and most of it has collapsed. On that same ride, a couple miles further up the canyon was this stone cabin, probably dating to mid or late 1800s. The walls are still standing today but the roof has collapsed.

Mining is what opened up Nevada and there are old abandoned mining camps all over the state...and the best part is, this is mostly on public land and available to explore to your hearts content. Been exploring it for over 50 years now, and why I love living here!

I really love checking out the ancient vehicles abandoned at some of these mining camps. Here's a car that was converted into a pickup. Count those cylinders, all in a row!

I've been thinking about it...I have a go pro 10 but I haven't gotten far on the idea.
I captured 24 minutes of riding this last Sunday. Software grabbed highlights to make sharable 60 second video. I don't see how to share and MP4 here.

Was fun for a 1st attempt. Supposed to be nice here in the central Ca Gold Country this weekend; will try capturing some more video and see if I can do some editing myself instead of the Insta360 AI thing.

Still waiting for the Dog harness; going to try mounting the camera on our German Shepherd too :)

Post the video elsewhere, e.g. YouTube, and then you can put the link in via the multimedia button above, between the paper clip and the chain icons.

All the best, Peter

All new to me. For decades in high tech, I'm pretty low tech. I've never posted to Youtube, tictok, instagram etc.

I guess I'll be learning. The whole reason for the camera was sharing ride footage with riding buddies, and sharing silly dog videos.

Anyone have one of these, 1999 ATK 605? How often do you change the cam drive belt and do/did you have issues with it idling??
I may be wrong, but IIRC those engines were made by Bombardier? They were very high performance, but I know very little to nothing about them. Some had a cantilever chain guide on the front countershaft sprocket.

I've had motorcycles for the last 20 years. My fist was a Suzuki SV650.Great little bike, but it has undergone some modification to make it better for me.

Then I bought a Suzuki Vstrom 1000 thinking I could travel as well as off-road with it. It's heavier and taller than the SV, so quite a handful in sand, mud, etc. I keep it on actual roads now.

I also have a '73 BMW R75 and '73 Triumph Bonneville. (wife has put her foot down, no more bikes unless I sell one)
Well, if the wife puts the foot down, it sure can kill a man's joy. :) Nice rides.

I talked with a young man today with a new Triumph 765. Looked like a street fighter type bike. It had Ohlins rear shock that came stock.

Stuff doesn't rot out there at the same rate it does here. Very jealous of your riding area(s).

I assume you don't still have the IT, but is that old XL yours? You may have already covered all that earlier in this thread, but I'm a recent follower of the thread.

The little XT250 left today. First guys to look at it took it home. Nice guys hopefully we can get together and ride one day. Now I can concentrate on the 2 that are left. One dirt and one street. Perfect. Right?

Two bikes is a good number. I've thought about reducing the stable and might be able to get down to three. One smallish dual sport, one mid size adventure bike, and one modern retro to tinker with and take me back to my youth.

Perfect. I have the small DS and the modern retro cruiser. Both do their job well. Now I just need the midsize ADV bike... My eye goes to the Honda Transalp. But don't tell the wife. It's too soon

Post a pic of that thing! I'd love to see what yours looks like. I bought a 1973 new in September of that year and rode it for many, many years.

I always liked them as a kid. (I was born in '63) This was a Craigslist find and I was heading downstate to visit family, so I brought a trailer... just in case. ;) He had a bunch of extra parts, new tires, etc. and you could tell he took good care of it. I should probably sell it, because I don't ride it enough. It never got out of the basement last year, but it's a joy to ride.

The Triumph was my brother's bike. He had dropped out of college after a couple years, then fought wildfires in CA, made some money and bought this '73 Bonneville. He's 10 years older and just decided to give up riding. His oldest son had it for a couple years, but parked it outside a couple winters, so my brother took it back, then gave it to me.

I've got the off-road trail bike, and my XR is a retro dual sport, if you think about it. It is essentially the same as when it was introduced in 1993.

If I could add anything else it would probably be another first gen FZ1, 1200 Bandit or ZRX1200. I've had two FZ1's, a 2001 and years later a 2002. Extremely quick sleepers.

Enjoying the hell out of my new to me retro 2022 Triumph Speedmaster. Looks like an old cop bike. The 1200cc twin is deceptively fast when prompted but happy to just lope along cruising the back canyon roads.

The engines were by Rotax and were well know bikes around flat tracks, electric start and street legal.

I love those Rotax engines; they have some very high specific HP/lb outputs.

I've never ridden a motorcycle with one, but it sounds fun.

All the best,

Peter

Oh, that's beautiful! And brings back a lot of memories!

As I said, I bought mine new in 1973. But I didn't buy it for the looks! I needed cheap reliable transportation; I had friends with Nortons, Triumphs and Harleys and they spent more time working on keeping their bikes running than they did riding. My research at the time told me that the BMW was by far the most dependable. And so it proved to be. My biggest expense was no doubt tires - couldn't get much more than 3000 miles out of a rear tire...and it was nothing for me to put on 3000 miles in a month. At least BMW's shaft drive setup made it simple to remove the rear wheel to change the tire.
