There are some good YouTube videos on making a stand for your auger attachment. What is not provided is a way to more easily change to a different size auger - like 6" to 8" for example. Any ideas?

I have a 12 inch auger, but for some reason I thought it was a good idea to get a 6 inch auger. There are two bolts that hold it on the gear shaft. I removed them and the auger slide right off. The smaller one slid on easily and the bolts went back on. I did it behind my tractor and it was a quick swap.

I hated the 6 inch auger and put the 12 inch back on a week later. I've never done it again.

I'm hoping with a stand I may use it more.

I too have the 12 and 6 inch bits. I use the 6 for posts and the 12 for plants/trees. I interchange them as the need arises and like Eddie mentions above I lift the auger until its about 5" off the ground. Loosen 1 bolt and let it slide out. Usually because I have been somewhat negligent in between uses I may have to sand off some surface rust so it will go back in the hole.

On a similar note, I had my BIL make me an attachment that bolts into the auger driver and I can now put in anchors. I have done this multiple times with the vineyard. Worked like a champ.

The last time I installed the bit in the auger I found it easier to stand up the bit and align the auger drive pin and set it down that way. I suppose it depends on your ability to manhandle the bit. With one hand it's difficult to use jedi mind tricks to either levitate the bit so I can install the pin, or vice versa. So, the stand-up-the-bit move was easier for me.

The way I stood up the bit was just leaned it against the firewood pile. But it did bring about the idea to build a stand, maybe similar to a floor rifle rack. It doesn't have to be giant nor cumbersome.

How do you guys store an Auger to make hooking and unhooking a one man job??
Pictures, Please!

I built a frame and hang it from a chain and turnbuckle. This allows me to move it around when hooking it up to my tractor. I rarely use the turnbuckle for installing it, but I will tighten it up when taking the auger off of the tractor.

how about drilling the auger in the ground to store it?

I hung mine from a tree branch at appropriate height with an adjustable strap til we built the pole barn. Now hangs from one of the 6x6 edge support poles.

I thought about burying a piece of 16” pipe on gravel for drainage, so far hasn’t gone beyond that.
Hanging it seems better, next to disassembled for storage.

The hanging method works good because you can move it around to attach it. When I rent/borrow a PHD, I use my overhead hoist to lift it off the skid or trailer. Then I can easily attach it to the 3pt as it is hanging.

I disassembled mine for indoor storage... actually, deep six, long term storage!

I found that with less than a dozen holes, I can hand dig them faster than re-assembling and putting it back together.

Also, when someone borrows it. It fits easier in the back of a car or truck when it's in pieces!

My FEL auger is on a pallet and I have a jack stand supporting the auger motor, so it tips forward a lil bit. I will be building a stand for it at some point. Some kind of triangle ish type stand.

I don't get the stand fuss... its one of the easiest thing to hook on and unhook for me.
long as you hang it, somewhat near its balance point, youve got it
Otherwise the complications could injure or kill you.

when I said the ''stand fuss'' I mean why hang it at all I lay mine on the ground or on a skid and it is one of the lightest and easiest attachment to hook up for me so I don't understand the need for a stand.

Exactly what I was thinking lol.

As far are op question if I had to change the bit I would do it as it lay on the ground or hook it up to the 3 point and change it there on the vertical position.

Seems like the easiest way to change the bit would be to lay it on the ground. Vertical would not be very difficult either as the bits are not heavy. There is just a single pin to remove the bit...

I just disassemble mine for storage:

Taking it apart is removing the two bolts that hold the auger on the gearbox, and one pin that holds the boom to the arch. I do that with it on the tractor and reassemble the same way. The gearbox is the only piece that is close to my ability to carry, I park the tractor about five feet away from the storage so I'm not moving it far.

With the boom on the tractor removing and installing the auger isn't hard, just hold the augur vertically and raise and lower the boom with the 3PH to get it lined up. I do this alone normally.
