Mower idler pulley

I didn't have any rivets (then), but had a bin full of bolts, so I used them. I considered staggering the rivet holes and plug welding the halves together, but went with bolts.

I got tunnel visioned on getting the bearing then realized I needed bolts that I didnt have.
Finally remembered that I had some steel pop rivets. Now I keep bolt assortments on hand.

I had one of those pulleys come apart on me yesterday. Took me 10 minutes to go to the JD store, 10 mins to talk to my buddy there, 10 mins to drive back and 10 mins to put it on. The new one has slots and no rivets in it. One of the edge rings separated on my old one but it would have never crossed my mind to change the bearing had it gone bad. I just don't have that much time. I think the pulley was 50 or 60 bucks from the JD place. It was 25 years old.

For me it's the hassle of getting them.

Far more dicking around than the $40 .
For anything that can't be easily shipped to my door, I agree.

But Deere delivers. Ten minutes at your computer while you sip your favorite bourbon one evening, is all it takes to have that part on your doorstep in 2-3 days.

At $40, I can understand why it's not serviceable. The part is cheaper than the labor hours that a shop would charge to press out and install new bearings... and so many tech's don't know how to properly press bearings.

You bring out a point in the labor hours.

Myself, I have invested in tools and equipment so heavily that I need to do these simple tasks in order to justify keeping them. ;-)

$40.84 for a package of all three idler pulleys to my door; order placed 7/2 evening, got it 7/5 morning.
Living in the country, it's hard to ask for more.

This is the brade pad I am referring to. View attachment 3740166

The picture is turned 90 degrees so the rivets holes would be installed horizontal. The spindle pulley brake edge will wear a 1/4 inch groove above and below the rivets holes and will start on what would be the vertical edge and wear until the grooves reach about the 1/2 way mark across the pad before the pad is worn through and the metal spindle pulley starts making contact with the metal backing plate.
Got a link and part number for those pads?
