Hey there folks,

My father-in-law is considering* letting me borrow his Deere 4520 TLB to save money in lieu of renting a mini excavator. The trailer at the local rental place was large enough for my CK2610, but the 4520 is considerably larger- and has a backhoe, so I couldn't begin to know if it's large enough. What size trailer ought I be looking for? I just want to be ready if this goes into motion.

*This was actually his idea.

A car hauler with double axel will work for width (72 inch wide tractor) with a tandem with 3500lbs axel it will be closely legal with a GVWR: ~7,000lbs.... the 4520 weigh around 3800lbs plus the FEL plus the backhoe, you are likely looking at 7000lbs if he has filled read tires... So if you want to play it safe go with a tandem with 5000lbs axel or a GVWR 10,000 lb trailer. But personally I wouldn't be scared to go with the 7000lbs.

Would not go with anything less than 10k gross trailer, so dual 5k axles. probably need 18-20 ft trailer to move tractor around to get load situated

If your Father In-Law is anything less than overwhelmingly gracious to you "borrowing" his equipment or offering to come over and run it himself... It ain't worth it. Just rent something. Have it dropped off and picked up. Many times over if a mini is a better machine for the job than a backhoe. You don't want to hear about that time you borrowed equipment at Christmas dinner 15 years from now.

To be honest, it would more than likely be me transporting the tractor and him operating it; this is his property, it's his tractor, I imagine it's going to be him operating it. It's just, after 17 years married to my wife this is a big step. I let him use my Kioti when he needs it, but I've never had a reason to use his Deere- plus it's an hour away lol.

He is an hour away, you don't have a trailer....
To save grace with the family, I think I would hire out the job and be thankful to the FIL for offering his equipment.

But I know how to save grace in the family and it isn't by saying no to a favor.

If he's borrowing your tractor why is he "considering" letting you use his backhoe? Too much risk with borrowing and transporting his backhoe.
the local Kubota dealer rents a large excavator, Renting it on a Friday after 1500 and returning monday is about $700. They deliver and pickup with that fee.
