Dialects are interesting. Mel Blanc was the man of 1,000 voices but Robert Easton was the dialect master. He was in lots of movies & TV shows.
Funny to me is going just 35 miles West of here, Roanoke, the accent is distinct. Cat is "ka-yat".
Years ago I worked with a guy from North Carolina that had the oddest accent. As he spoke it was a with a grunting sound. (East Carolina we think?).
We're not all that far from Mount Airy which Andy Griffith named it Mayberry. Mount Pilot was actually Pilot Mountain, NC. Howard Morris aka Ernest T. Bass had a pretty good southern accent although he was from the Bronx!

Anytime I've heard that expression, it meant really really good.
A guy I used to work with who was from Maine would call something that was really good the cat's @ss.
It was pouring really really good out there!!!

"Up the creek without a paddle." Doesn't really sound too bad. Much better than being "down the creek without a paddle."
