I bought one of those 6.5 ton electric log splitters, good enough for the small amount of wood I split around here.

I first fabricated a hitch so it could be towed behind my mower. The hitch is just a couple of angle irons and a piece of rebar for the pin I welded up then bolted it to the splitter.

The crappy plastic wheels had to go, they wouldn't survive the trip down the rough path to my wood pile. I welded a couple of pieces of 5/8"od, 1/2"id" tubing over the original axles so I could install the new wheels. I also spread the stance of the wheels by 4" to lessen the risk of this thing tipping over while being towed.

The front support leg was too close to the ground and I feared it would easily hit a rock so I modified it to swing back while in tow.

and lastly I added a hitch to my dump trailer so I could tow everything down to the wood pile in one shot. The motor hangs a bit low so I'll have to be careful on the off road adventures.

They are predicting 101F heat index this weekend so I probably won't be splitting wood until is cools off a bit.

While I don't own a splitter and have no present requirement for one, I like the knetic splitters better. Looks good however. You sure 6.5 ton will be sifficient?

It split a couple of 15" stumps I had no problem, I don't have anything larger than that really. I have a couple more trees to take down but nothing big so it should do me fine.....and it was cheap. :)

My neighbor has a 32ton gas splitter, it's waaaay too much for what I need...but I did think about it.

My issue would be cycle times. If you only split a small amount then cycle times are not revelant but if you are doing a bunch, that's were a kinetic splitter shines as they are quick (under 2 seconds cycle time), versus 10-15 seconds for a hydraulic splitter and you can buy knetic splitters with corded electric motors so no gas engine to maintain and I see Ryobi offers a 40 volt battery operated one.

One thing about a knetic splitter is once the flywheel is up to speed, it instantly ready to split. I think if I ever bought one, would be a knetic splitter because of the simplicity and no engine to maintan either (on a lot of them).
