I buy all my seeds from Gurneys. They are all produced in Ohio.
I get mine from either Berlin Seed in Berlin, Ohio, or Holmes Seed near Canton, OH. I've been very happy with the germination rate, and quality of plants the seeds produce.

I used to get seed from Southern States farm store, but they also offered free shipping on any order. Since they stopped that, I don't even think they ship anymore. Luckily, there is a store in Paris, KY I stop at on my way home. They have left of seeds from the season before knocked down to clearance prices. Below is a pic of $12 worth. The 2, 1/4 lb. pkgs. of the Silver Queen Sweet corn is nearly worth the $12.

What geographic area and climate are you in? That affects what to plant.
Southeastern Ohio. The gourds I am planting seeds from come from close by so I know they will do well as long as I give them good soil and moisture. I have seen where gourds have been grown up trees so I may throw a few seeds under my catalpa just to see what happens.

I spread 20 yards of compost on the garden and did a first pass with the tiller this weekend. Got onions, radishes and peas planted in the raised beds yesterday. I'm still two weeks out from getting the bulk of the garden planted. Historically Memorial day was the time to plant around here, now it's mid May. We will finish spreading 50 bags of cedar mulch in the flower beds today.

Sunny with a high of 80 today, the ground is warming up and drying out fast.

Berlin Seeds is a fine company with excellent products. Their "cover crop" that has field turnips in it and is widely used in gardens around here and looks terrific. Most of the gardens of the Amish seem to use it.

Good deal. We're in the black dirt flat ground of Ohio and have had the best results with the snake and bottle gourds. Don't plant too close together because of powdery mildew and rotate ground. We used to pull all or vines and roots in the fall and burn or dump in a field away from the house.

We found the snake gourds on a high trellis did great. Don't plant too close or you'll get small gourds. I'll try to find a picture of my last remaining snake gourd grown on a trellis. It's maybe 3 ft long and rattles with seeds. Don't save seed since they all cross. Go easy on the fertilizer till the fruit starts to form to think Jack and the Beanstalk.

When all done and dry, we clean the grunge off the outside with a little warm water and one of those stainless, coarse steel wool looking pot scrubbers. Good luck.

Thank you. Very valuable information. Things I did not know especially the mildew situation.

You can spray for the mildew and just a little cntrols the problem. Name begins with a D.... and I have some in the barn if anyone wants me to look. I bought at a Lowe's.

Powdery mildew is that white stuff on the leaves and will wipe out vine crops and tomatoes. Best prevention is air circulation between plants. Space your tomatoes out, use cages or stake. Also trim leaves that touch the ground. Don't over concentrate planting.

Places that get really cold, like Maine, naturally control the bacteria by freezing it. Warmer areas not so lucky.

Shew', that's enough for today. One of last years cabbage plants survived the winter, looks like Deer may have pawed around and uncovered the others somewhat. Was really hoping one of the second generation plants would have survived to see what a 3rd generation would produce.

At least I can say I got started planting...

Plants in the little greenhouse aren't looking too bad. At least another 2-3 weeks before setting them out to get well past the frost date.

Sonny580, Do you guys hear those wind turbines much? Is there anything to the claims of "infrasound" being a problem? Looks like you might know . . . Thanks.

Finally, some rain for a day of rest. 200+ cabbage plants set Sunday afternoon. In the morning, I planted 4 rows of Phacelia to attract bees, plus 4 rows of Sunflowers around the perimeter to make a hedge fence to keep Deer out. I thought 1 lb. would do it, but ran short. Went back to the seed dealer early yesterday morning and got 4 more lbs., enough to make 10 rows. Watered the plants in well with Fish fertilizer, just before dark.

Rain was supposed to be here by 11:00 a.m. Still no rain so planted some Daikon Radishes alongside the cabbage plants to draw those pesky whit butterflies away from the cabbage. Checked the radar and nothing remotely close, so jumped into it and hooked the disk, modified to make hill rows up to my little Sears ST10 and made two hill rows for onions and the other for Beets I grow for some friends.

I made the drop tube for planting onion sets and is really handy for planting beets. It takes a few minutes longer to drop them one at a time for proper spacing and not wasting seed. It took me around 8 minutes to plant that 90' row but will probably save me hours when it comes to start hoeing in 80º heat.

Getting somewhat of a break today but planning on canning up some Asparagus friends let me pick from their patch. I find it amazing friends of mine sell Asparagus for $6 lb., but these folks can hardly give it away for the cutting. I bought this weeder at a yard sale for 50 cents a few years ago to spot weed Jimson weed and a few others in the garden, it makes a dandy Asparagus cutter..!! It has a 3' handle but choke up on it at around 2', grab the Asparagus by the top place the "V" at the bottom of the stalk and give it a little jab below the surface of the dirt and it cuts right off. I dressed it up with a file, then finished by polishing up with my air angle grinder with a fiber Roloc gasket removal disc for a good sharp edge. Sure beats paying $20+ for an Asparagus knife which looks exactly the same, only with a shorter handle.

Has anyone done the beer trick to attract and kill slugs? I have slugs eating my lettuce. It is a little too rainy right now but as soon as we get a couple of clear days I am going to give it a try.

Last year our sweet corn did pretty well... This year I'm trying side dressing with urea to see how the growth compares

I'll be interested in how that works out. Did you use pellets or liquid?
