Outstretched, my thumb to pinkie is 9-3/4. thumb to index is 8-1/2. I eyeball my firewood lengths, because with the IBC totes as long as theyre not over 20-22" I can fit 2 courses deep. If they are, i just stick them out the cutout in the front, or lay them sideways in between the 2 courses. My stove will fit somewhere aroung a 30" front to back, so it all goes in the stove. Do I appreciate a perfectly measured wood stack? Of course, who doesn't? But at the end of the day when I'm loading 8-9 pieces in my stove for the night, I use the long ones I've saved all day. The top of the stove will still boil water at 5:30 am therefore the Mrs. is toasty, and thats all that matters to me!
You need to stretch more
In addition to overall size, a major factor in this is how far you can spread your fingers/thumb. My hands are far less flexible than they were when I was younger, so I suspect the distance of the spread has changed. My son wears a size smaller glove than I do, and his fingers are a little shorter but his span is the same, maybe slightly larger.
I used to have an 11-inch hand span. With arthritis, it's now about 9-inches. Things don't bend like they used to.
There is a guy who comes through town about once a month, who does the gloves in all the stores. If I need new gloves, I just let the girls at the local Ace Hardware know that next time he is in, to get me a couple of pair. I like to have a couple of new pairs in the truck, and a pair on the tractor at all times. I have a bad habit of losing and tearing them.
