Lost my barn in a wind storm this winter.. will probably be a year before I can get a new barn built.. I have several pieces of equipment, mowers, discs, plows, scrapers, auger… that I will be storing outside. Should I cover them with a tarp or not.. with a tarp dampness still gets in, without a tarp they dry out quicker.

Can you make a frame to suspend the tarps above equipment to keep some of the sun and rain off yet allow airflow so they dry quicker.

I keep both tractors under a carport. I like the ease of access. Don't smoke the shop up with Diesel Etc.. I First tried the tarp but it was pitiful. I used sheet metal roofing so if you start with a good solid frame And tarp it you can always add as the time and $ permits. Weather also!

Cars are shaped to sit outside and shed water, but tractors and implements seem to collect the rain.
I use the old fashioned waxed cotton tarps. Tied down all around, and skirt high....not touching the ground lets air flow under them. They last for 3 or 4 years.

I have room in the garage for the tractor… not the implements. No time to build anything, tried tarp carport and it blew away in the first windstorm.. property is a valley/ wind tunnel..

Maybe a 20 or 40 ft shipping container?
There's a shed sales place about 5 miles from here that sells new and reposessed ones. Our neighbor bought a reposessed one about 15ftx20ft, a roll-up door one end, window on other and a walk in door. I saw them deliver it and level with blocks. He said $1,800 delivered and full of stuff, mostly good, some junk.

That’s a good idea, but I’m saving my $$’s to pit up a big pole barn now ..

We never put out disc or mold board under roof. Greased the mold boards it sat out. Disc we made sure was raised and locked so discs didn’t sit on the ground. Mowers depending on bearing style may not be a big concern either. Big them is to try and keep them from sitting directly on the ground.

Use your judgement on what bearings, gearboxes, pivot joints, etc that water can potentially get in and do damage and store accordingly.

For 25 years I have kept all the implements outside uncovered, except the chipper which is in the garage. The tractor is covered but with ventilation.

If you get a tent type carport, which is a good idea, make sure it can handle your snow and wind load. Have seen many flattened ones in my travels around here.
