When you start a private message, under the recipient line you can enter multiple user names

Yes, at the bottom under Conversation Participants click the "Invite more" link.

I’ve found it’s cleaner to start a fresh PM when looping in a new person, then paste the key bits or quote the last message so everyone has context. Also worth asking the original folks if they’re ok with it, since some forums let the new person see previous messages and some don’t. I usually double check that before adding anyone. For time sensitive stuff when people don’t check PMs, I send a quick group text via SMS.to – Text messaging with SMS, Viber, Whatsapp, RCS and Telegram - SMS.To using their API and replies thread nicely. It’s been handy for opt in reminders and quick confirmations.

Is it possible to add an additional person to a private message conversation?

Sure.
We have a group of over 20 of us who have had a private message conversation going for years now.

I’d doubt it’s truly 100% “private” though.
