Good morning!!!!

that's an impressive collection of tunes.
funny I was researching the owner's manual on line for a new boombox I bought for the garage.
Figure cd mechanism will work a lot better if I keep unit in house until I want to use it.
I can leave it in the garage during the summer but need to remember to put a towel over it.
haven't bought a boombox in ?? years

this one is a Phillips and has some euro features, like DAB radio.
something must be preventing it from coming to US, something with FCC?
because has a lot more potential than conventional FM apparently:

DAB differs from FM radio in several ways:
  • Transmission: DAB uses digital transmission, while FM uses radio waves.

    • Range: DAB has a wider range than FM.
    • Sound quality: DAB has better sound quality than FM.
  • Noise: DAB has no noise because it doesn't use radio waves.
  • Switching stations: DAB+ radios allow you to easily switch between stations without tuning to specific frequencies.
DAB is available in many countries, including the UK and Germany. However, the US is not equipped with DAB.

I had to go online to read the manual because the tiny fonts on the cheesy origami foldup instructions were unreadable.
found out I did have FM, and where the loudness button was. Unit came with a metal antenna, had to have a radio.
but had to go to a source button first to have it identify itself.
It even has a selector allowing me to choose between
a preset sound effect:
POWERFUL
BALANCE
WARM BRIGHT
and CLEAR

let's see....powerful likely boosts bass, balance possibly boosts a wide range but ?
warm is boosted midrange, bright is boosted treble.
Clear must be off...?
all of this is in addition to that loudness control. 12 watts rms, would love to see a distortion graph of amp.
two way speakers likely unbaffled. They probably have magnets the size of a lifesaver candy.

I was thinking it would be fun to have someone like Popgadget with a real musician's ear or PJ or ?
try to do a blind identify on the tone settings. Was that clear or bright?
bottom line is find the one that doesn't sound tinny, probably the Powerful setting.
first time I played it was unimpressive, time to turbo the woofer.

more importantly is has a USB input and I have a memory stick with 191,000 songs on it.
given to me from places unspecified, other than someone dumped a radio stations digital file years ago.
it's all older stuff, but that's fine.
put that in boombox and hope it can read it. I tried that usb memory stick in an older Ram truck and it locked up, likely a buffer issue.
if it just goes to the next song, seems to work ok. But if put on shuffle then it hung up

Wasn't there something similar to DAB briefly available on cellphones 20 years ago or so? I seem to remember it being on the Nextel system.

Good Evening,

Buppies, I would agree with that statement, I’ll bet you could get a lot of bales in that old barn ! I’m not sure I could count that high ! 😉😂
FIrst floor is 12 foot ceiling. Hay loft is at least 20 feet up. Hay hook still works. At most we had about 2,500 bales at one time up there. And had room to spare. New roof about two years ago. Should be good for another 100 years.

Nextel push button to talk like cb Mark Warner was one of founding members ex gov and us senator from Virginia
I believe Jack Markell, ex gov of Delaware, was employee number 3 at Nextel. Or that's the story I've heard. Coincidental that they both ended up as governors?

Interesting you filter prior to the pressure tank, I was thinking after the tank.
Yes, even as I described my system I wondered why - and then remembered - why I had done it that way. Back when I first put it together it surprised me how much all the filtration slowed the water flow. So I put the tanks (2) after the treatment. That way house water stays at higher pressure for longer as it is used.
Also no water hammer.
Years later I worked on a municipal water system for a neighboring town, and realized that theirs also stores water post treatment - in a water tower, same difference.

Good evening all. 32ºF for the start, mostly clear sky, light breeze. Light wind, Most clear with some high cirrus, and high temp was 48ºF. 4 day warm up then much colder, still below average temp by next Friday. Made coffee to start day, work on reconciling checkbook register to bank statements, Went for 32 mile bike ride, Had 1 of the Saturday group join me. Nap Dinner and watch bowl games.
Dennis hope the rib were good reheated.
David thanks, lot of work to get those miles in :)
Ron hope snow control went well. I ended up 2024 by staying up.
NHBX Nice pic, sorry Jasmine doesn't want to hang with us.
Bill enjoy the plowing. Hope roast was good.
Drew sorry so cold, we are cooling off here as well. Sorry fence is so expensive. Was nice meeting you on the road trip. You can probably find better ways of spending the money. Stay warm.
Buppies sorry about the upcoming cold, my insert will go a long way to keeping house warm here. Hope you can find the help you need for the upcoming year. prayers sent. When I learned to fly, I could rent a C-150 trainer for $11 an hour and that price covered everything including gas.
Billy glad you and Della got a hike in. Sorry about the storms. hope no damage. Sounds like nice party. Hope you found a hike, I did get a ride in.
Frits hope you enjoyed staying up. Sorry about new van problem, glad you found a mechanic you like.
Dennis sorry weather did not cooperate.
Steve(B751) hope not too much snow.
Scott(vt) glad you slept well. I don't doubt Opa got a wee bit tired from processing firewood as well. Hope you enjoyed the family time. Hope cleanup goes/went well.
Mike hope you and your wife are able to simplify your lives in 2025.
Thomas hope you got some branches picked up, Ohio State Vs Oregon quite the game, Texas vs Arizona Stat quite the ending.
rScotty nice and cold in the mountains. Nice filter setup.
Don glad house has been staying 71-73ºF despite temp swings. Sorry robot has bad on/off switch hope you can replace it soon. Sorry about the string of loosing pets or relative(s).
Dennis hope good trip NE and opportunities to meet TBNers.
Drew in addition to the insulation he has features in the house that buffer the temps well. We had a fireplace prior to the insert installation, it was not effective to help warm the house.
Masseyrider good point on CO, off gases and Radon in houses with crawl space and basements.
Ken glad good NYE party. Sorry fireplace not better at providing heat. Sorry too windy hope table progressed well.
David Happy Birthday to Kekoa. Hope gathering was fun.
RNG no hangover here, just on shot of Baileys Irish Cream. I made to Midnight and fell asleep will fireworks were going off. Glad you got CC straightened out without needing a new CC. Hope house organization progress continues. Sorry about all the sick friends.
PJ good to hear from you. Sorry to hear about a lot of ice/snow in forecast. Hope you can get some studio time.
Mike that's different, buying for a barn, not the house :)
Newbury nice truck the short bed is a bigger deal than the color. Looks well equipped.
Dennis sorry about the trampoline. New Orleans attack beyond sad :(
Thomas sorry to hear about the changes at the Weathervane.
Drew glad pickup at airport went smoothly. When I used cell phone lot in Saint Louis not much moving around. I am still working on my recipes.
Paul bet the albums and videos bring back memories. I used to play a lot with old computers, had a MicroVax II and SGI R400 and SGI O2. Listen to radio a lot in car on trips. Impressive amount of CD and albums.
Drew have fun with boom box, USB probably has to0 many file in root directory or has more than a root directory, Lot of MP3 players are picky about file structure.
Mike thanks for pic.
Buppies I remember Nextel push to talk, lot of people upset when that feature went away.

Drinking first cup of coffee. 25° with cloudy skies this morning. Heading to 29° with cloudy skies. Got snow off back walkways. Warm weather got rest of the ice. Visited neighbor's who had a baby day after christmas. Sure is a cute baby. When got home worked at getting WiFi plugs that I received for Christmas programmed into my network. I think I am going to like them. Grocery shopping this morning. Then see what I get into for rest of the day.
