Looking at a TYM T494H versus a T574H. Identical machines except the 574 has a turbo charger, which adds +6.7 engine HP and +6.5 PTO HP. Same hydraulic specs, so the pump is as efficient at 48.3 HP as it is at 55 HP. Hmm.

I’m curious who would value that modest gain in HP (and probably torque gains too). Lots of PTO requirements, I guess?

Look at the requirements for your pto implements. Also if you live at higher elevations a turbo is a real benefit, because hp is reduced with naturally aspirated engines.
Great point… we’re right around 1,310 ft. MSL, so I think we’re good.

I am dealing with a lot of broken up shale rock embedded in soil to carve out access roads/trails in hilly (max 10-15%) sloped terrain, but mostly 5-10% slopes. So, considerable box blade and rock bucket work. I can take my time here.

Also have woods to clear and stumps to grind/backhoe out. For me, really just trying to make sure with a loaded bucket that I don’t get too underpowered to manage those slopes.

I may be mistaken, but thought turbos add more complexity.
Any addition increases complexity.
Turbos are good at increased elevations. They pump more air into the cylinders.
New school turbos are much more reliable than old ones.
If you are working your machine hard before you shut down it's good to let the engine idle for a few minutes. It gives the turbo time to cool down and cycle oil through.
Other than that I've had no issues.

Turbos in the good old turbo Diesels are still reliable.

Older such engines for from Catepillar, John Deere, International Harvester, Cummins etc. are good examples.

I’d definitely suggest the Turbo upgrade if you operate your tractor at elevation or require the addition PTO power. That $1,400 and 14% power increase could have a significant impact to improve ownership experience and to meet your performance expectations you have for your new tractor.

Power loss due to elevation is about 3% for every 1,000ft ASL. So at 1,300ft you're looking at more like an 18% difference between the two tractors. At least that's what the science says.

For PTO work, take the turbo.
For everything else, take the heaviest tractor your pocket can afford.

I am in the turbo camp for the cleaner exhaust for one. No not an enviromentalist, but I would rather breath the exhaust from a turbo tractor vs a naturally aspirated one.

I had this same option and I decided on the T494. I have hilly property, some fairly steep stuff that I mow. I also stump grind and just recently got a stump bucket which works great! The TYM replaced my Kioti NX50 which I used for the same stuff but it had too many issues so I traded in for the TYM without all the BS electronics that causes many problems.

You can possibly save some money if you buy the TYM RK55 version of the T574. I probably would have done this if I didn't need to trade-in.

I was curious how well these stump buckets worked. Great pics! I’m curious if you have sloped areas if you ballasted the tires? I’m really concerned about rollover where I am.

My first tractor - y’all have no idea how much I cherish this advice. Watching Tractor Mike’s stuff on YouTube and want to heed all 10 of his safety warnings.

Here is typical of what I’m dealing with. Refreshment added for scale. 😉

Yes, the rear tires have liquid ballast. My slopes are such that I could roll if I'm not careful. I mow straight up and back down the hills. I also got a Inclinometer to help keep an eye on it.

Basic stuff for you veterans, but practical information for computer programmers heading into retirement
