Not ground hornets...but boat hornets!

Getting ready for some fall fishing...gingerly uncovered the boat and carefully opened the hatches...

Guess the answer is to go fishing more often so the buggers don't get a chance to move in...

I got stung about six times two weeks ago and I still itch where they got me. My property is on a ridge with trees almost all the way around. I was weed whacking the area around the trees up to where the ground slopes off so that the leaves will blow down over the bank. Having not trimmed since last year, it was pretty overgrown so I never saw it coming.

The wasp spray that I had on hand was about empty but I did manage to kill a few until I bought more spray. Then I went out after dark with a headlamp to light the way. I sprayed a little at the hole then poked it with a stick to open it up and then pretty much emptied the can on it.

Next day, no bees. I walked by there today. The hole was dug open and there were pieces of the nest laying around the opening. No idea what critter had dug the nest out? The hole was huge! I had no idea that the bees could build like that!

At least around here, skunks are the usual destroyer of these ground hornet nests. It's an endearing quality of theirs, that somewhat makes up for their smell.

I love my local black bears because they usually find and dig out the ground hornets/ yellow jackets and feast on the grubs. I just look for smashed down grass and dirt piles when mowing and pay special attention when I see those signs. Occasionally the bears can't dig deep enough and I come back at night with a load of dirt in the hoe bucket and drop and tamp that dirt down hard. Nasty buggers can't dig their way back out if I hadn't already crushed the nest. Fun with backhoe.

I discovered a ground nest of bees this weekend located right next to my water spigot that I had the kids turning on/off for me so lucky they did not get stung. Looks like I am gonna pour a little gas in it this evening and cover with a scoop of dirt. Hopefully that resolves the issue...

Seven dust works also but it takes a few days. I've dumped about 1/2 cup right on top of the hole during the day using a long stick (6-8') with yogurt container screwed to it. Dump and walk away. They will crawl trough the dust brining it into the hive and after a few days their are all dead.

Let us know how the gasoline works, it may be much quicker, good luck.

Mix gasoline and diesel 50-50, pour in hole and light it. It will burn slowly due to the diesel and not be explosive.
