XR4145 Hard Shuttle Shifting

I have a XR4145 that I've been abusing for about 7 yrs. Been doing fair amount of maintenace as required. Recently my Fwd/Rvrs is getting stuck when I shift. I'm at a stop, clutch is in. I go to shift and the handle just flexes. After I rock back or forth it will release and I can shift.
What did I do this time?

Take the side cover off your steering column - the left side as you're looking at it from the driver station.

Follow the shift lever to the shift lever shaft. The shaft is 2 piece - 1 piece fits inside the other with a spiral flex pin to keep them tied together. That flex pin works loose and makes it difficult shifting as its hitting something in there. Eventually the pin will fall out and you will be stranded.

What I did was put the pin back in and wrapped duct tape around the shaft so it wont work free again. Probably a better solution would be a cotter pin instead of the flex pin. Get a cotter pin that fits the hole properly so the shift lever is not loose.

Thats what happened to me on my MT3 I'm not totally positive its the same setup but I bet it is. gl
