Took my Mother to the Old Faithful site many years ago. I had been there several times before. She started getting freaked out by all the Bear Warning signs and didn't want to leave the car when we got to Old Faithful.
I convinced her that everything was safe, especially, here, with all the people and Park Rangers around. She reluctantly agreed to get out of the car, and walk with me through the Geyser Field. She started to get comfortable. Then I suggested we hike up to the viewing platform. When we got there, the platform was covered in caution tape. I figured something needed to be fixed with the platform. We got back down to the main field, and I asked a Ranger, "Whats up with the viewing platform?" And the Ranger says "There was a Bear Attack up there yesterday and we haven't been able to clean the site yet. A woman was badly mauled, but should survive. We had to shoot the bear." My Mom didn't speak to me for the rest of the day.
