YELLOWSTONE PARK DANGER

curious what the danger is? unpredictability?

the real danger we have in national parks out west are the people disturbing the wildlife spaces/territory esp w/young: bison, moose, bear, etc. in the name of self indulgent selfies. thinking animals are meant to be fuzzy wuzzy for us humankind: idiots putting themselves & wildlife at risk

This, I've seen bison IRL before and nothing made me think "I should get closer to this animal."
They are immense, and anyone who thinks getting closer is a good idea is a fool.

What danger? The animals almost always win. I'd call it natural selection...

I've only spent one day, tooling around Yellowstone. 1999, in a Sunbeam Alpine. There were sections roped off in a few parking lots, for sink holes starting... One day wasn't enough. I'd love to go back.

but sometimes the young are rejected by mother b/c handled by humans. no one wins in human interference. those who can't resist fuzzy wuzzy should go to a petting zoo instead
btw the Alpine is sporty rig. ever look into the Tiger?

I sold the dark one, that we took out west. I still have a yellow one, that I stuffed a 351 in. Full cage, 5 speed, narrowed 9", Mustang II front suspension. Faster than a Tiger, but not worth as much $.

You got that right. I was snowmobiling thru yellowstone park years ago when a herd of buffaloe came walking down the road. All we could do is shut off the machine and stay perfectly still. There were maybe 20 sleds shut down on the road. The animals just walked on by without paying us any mind. Those beast are huge. Very intimidating.. ive worked cattle on horseback and on the ground for many years. This was NOTHING like that.

When did these abbreviations become popular such as IIRC, NVM, etc?

Originally, when texting first became popular. (I'd hazard a guess to say mid to late 2000's)
I received my first cell phone around that same time, it's a habit that has stuck with me ever since and I've unlearned a certain portion of it for work emails and the like. But you know what they say about old habits.

As an OLD Usenet addict......

Creation and evolution

Internet slang is used in chat rooms, social networking services, online games, video games and in the online community. Since 1979, users of communications networks like Usenet created their own shorthand.

On my Yellowstone visit, we happened upon a "special" guided tour where the ranger took us off the regular trail. He had a sidearm, kept a whistle handy and kept banging some garbage can lids, to warn off the danger. Eye opening, to say the least... The wandering bison and elk were bigger than my little sports car. We never saw any bears.

I guess I've never felt the need to use a lot of the popular abbreviations since I can type 80 WPM.
What I don't get is using certain abbreviations that save a few letters at most, like NVM. :)

Made a difference at 1200 baud or less.... That's when all file compression came into being, before modems could some compression on the fly.
but then again why use WPM or MPH or MPG?

When I was working around Yellowstone the park had so many tourist goring incidents that they started handing out flyers at the entrance station. I can't find it now but it had a graphic drawing of a tourist being flung into the air by an angry bison and warnings like "Bison can run at 30 mph!".

It's not changed in 40 years.
