Diabetes - a disease of national epic proportions. A disease that most in the field want to treat not prevent. There is no where near the profit in prevention.
Type II is largely caused by inactivating and being overweight.

What you say is true, but has not been my experience. My family doctor/nurses are all actively helping/encouraging me to get my A1C down to where I don't need medication. It's very empowering to have them on my side.

Inactivity and diet would be the cause in my opinion.
I'm marginally more active than a yr ago, truth be told. But a keto diet has dropped my A1c and weight significantly.

Son is here. Doing great..........here. Took him from TIR of very low 30's to currently high 70's. After Tandem finally upload I see he only averages 1 meal with insulin. He has rules, expectations, and structure here. Doesn't question us or anything. Not sure what goes on out there. But it's all his fault according to mom.

Most doctors have received next to no education on nutrition. Are they the best people to help cure you of an illness caused by poor nutrition. I'm glad you have people encouraging you to get you A1C down. You may want to look up Virta. They program has helped tens of thousands get off medication and reverse diabetes. Many insurance programs cover the cost, but many are self pay and claim to be saying money since they are off the medications.

my primary doc is a small stature man with not an ounce of fat on him.
My endocrinologist and oncologist are both tall and thin.
I worry they think I'm a fat slob with no willpower.
When I see my primary in two weeks, will ask him to try hard to get me approved for Mounjaro or similar.
At 6.0 AIC I don't qualify for any help I believe.
But I'm not sure so will ask again.
maybe some combo of risk factors plus fact I'm on hydrocortisone for apparently forever
after adrenal cancer. The question is which of my docs has the authority to get this approved.

meanwhile I'm eating a lot of salads, avoiding fast food, avoiding all soda, avoiding almost anything that comes in a cardboard box.
and I continue to read labels carefully for grams of sugar and grams of added sugar. Almost out of principle I try to avoid
anything with added sugar.

avoidance has to be smarter than treatment.
For most folks, exercise and diet will work.
but you can't talk about it, you have to do it.

I finally got my phone to say I was walking as much as last year.
even with shoe inserts, plantar fasciitis makes my foot flare up after half a mile.
some days if I were a car I don't think I'd pass inspection...
but out I go if the day is nice and I try to stay as active as possible.
When I walk in from the supermarket lot, I try to hustle a little.

I'm not where I want to be but I'm not adding mental stress to myself at my age to
fit in the middle of a bell curve. Being heavy is one thing, being sick is another.
And we all know diabetes can make you very sick.

Uncared for type I or II will put you in the hospital and/or death early. Watching your blood glycogen and a1c is the path to normal live expectancy and more fun while living. Eating a reasonable and varied diet and moving around is the boring secret.

was at hospital at 6am for annual blood lab draws, including AIC
should know that next week.
primary doc ordered a nuclear stress test to check my heart, didn't like my elevating bp.
and a lung function test
I'm sure they'll find something billable in all that...
every three or four years, likely because I have great insurance, docs run me through a lot of tests.
four hours for that stress test after fasting sucks.

my last AIC was 6.0
if it goes up this won't end well with my endocrinologist, who sees me for adrenal insufficiency but who
specializes in diabetes. He is tall and thin and seriously down on being overweight.

and I got the "choices" lecture by my primary yesterday. I seem to need that repeated.
and perhaps like a few others, some days I wish I did as I say instead of doing what I do...

Sounds like sound advice to me. Let us know your test results.

My minimum steps per day goal is 6000. My minimum minutes of activity is 90. I typically achieve 12000+ steps per day and 2+ hours of real activity.

My father started having issues with A1C when he became sedentary. I find I can eat whatever I want, as long as I also don't sit in my arse.

6.0 in and of itself is a fairly good number. High protein diet helps. Processed carbs are killers. If I even look at a potato chip, my blood sugar spikes big time. That said, ozempic is also for cardiovascular as well as diabetes. Seems to work. There are coupon programs that get the out of pocket down to $125 month. Get old, stuff wears out and breaks. Sad fact.

Most people get more than needed protein.

I will always eat more protein than grains. We are carnivores with teeth, for a reason.

   / Diabetes #516
It doesn't really matter what kind a ___vore I am. What I've noticed is that it's easier to lose weight when I eat more meats and avoid sugar. Vegetables are basically treat to be eaten once a month or so. If I eat vegetables every day they are disgusting. It's very probably not a longevity diet but at least i can enjoy what I eat.

I'm not sure I understand why I'd want to pay $125/month to put a chemical in my body that has known and likely unknown bad side effects instead of doing what it right for my body. I guess I'm just old fashioned and have lived through enough drug recalls. I only take stuff for acute, short term issues, like an infection.

bummer

lab tests come back quickly
AIC crept up to 6.1 from 6.0
sugar was 115
both too high

Nortrac, for some of us, even eating properly doesn't work.
I admit I don't all the time, but I'm not bad. yes I eat whole grain bread.
yes I have ice cream a few times a month.
I have to take steroids every day due to prior cancer. That in itself makes losing weight very hard.
whatever it would take to change my direction, pretty clear so far I haven't found it.
I have failed, according to accepted medical science.

my primary says he wants all his older patients to have as many good years as possible and not spending the last five to seven years
in a medical nightmare from diabetes or a stroke. I'm all for that.
Both my parents died young of cancer. I've already had cancer.
Likely to return in next five years.
of course we all know sugar by itself feeds cancer.
I won't say I'm doomed but with no kids, I have a birdie on one shoulder
telling to just eat whatever I want.
and this other noisier vegan birdie on the other shoulder that gets a lot more
attention when the numbers climb the wrong way.

5 percent negative reaction I think for that pill.
not what you'd allow on a plane flight...

30 years ago I was on weight watchers. We had a wellness program at a smallish high tech
company where I was GM and had about 180 employees reporting to me, and they were almost all women.
And lots of them wanted to have WW at work. So of course, to be supportive....I signed up too.
I've always been a few pounds over so why not.
It was kind of nerve wracking every Monday morning weighing in.
anxiety producing for many

I'd like to avoid nerve wracking and anxiety for sure.
So that shot in the hip every week might be the right medicine for me.

If I decide on it, will track results here.

Last yr A1c down from 7.0 to low 6s by adopting a keto diet. I'm avoiding processed carbs like the plague. Eating a salad for lunch. Taking Turmeric and other daily supplements. Stopped taking statins, the side effects are gone. Weight down from 205 to 180. Winning and holding the pattern.

   / Diabetes #520
I'd say the 115 is good but the 6.1 is high. You are having high blood glycogen swings in there somewhere.
