Seems like there could be a better way to handle heavy totes?

I’ve heated with wood exclusively for maybe 17 years. My oil Burner isn’t even connected anymore. I’ve always cut and split my wood myself. I’ve changed how I do it over the years and still continue to do so. I used to scrounge all the free wood I could get. I’m in a better place financially now than I was back then and unless I can drive right up to it free wood isn’t worth my time and effort. I’ve bought log trucks but typically I’ll buy a cord or two log length dump trailer loads dumped in my yard. Now I cut them up and use the log lift on the splitter and then stack the splits into an Ibc tote. As of now with my little Massey I can fill the back row and a little bit in the front row before the little
Fella won’t do it. I double stack them now. When I get my. Bigger tractor I’m gonna be able to totally fill the tote and I should be able to stack three high.

I do want to start selling wood but I need to build up a bigger inventory. I’ve sold a little bit of people have asked me but I haven’t advertised or anything like that. I would live a dump trailer so I can just dump out the tote then dump the load. Only touch would be stacking it in the tote. The difference I’ve found in loose throw in the tote is it’s a 1/5th of a cord vs 1/3 stacked.

Or, you could sell firewood by the tote, and take a deposit for the tote when dropping off full ones. Then swap out with the next full tote when they buy next year, or if they don't, tell them you'll return their deposit when they return the tote. Make the deposit enough to pay for the tote if you never get the tote back ($40-$50).

more like $100-$150 at least that's the amounts these tote goes for in my area.

If the customer had a way to remove the tote the vehicle that would work.

Sometimes I like to use my little trailer for firewood. Especially when thinning. I can get 3/4 of a cord on it.

I have to load it by hand and that gets riskier every year on an already abused back. I wondered if I could put a simple crane on my forestry winch .... so I made a model and did an experiment. It is not a strong crane. Just something to get a feel to see if building a proper one would be worth it. I think I will - fun if nothing else.

I'm just using small wood. The hinges I used are cheap cast hook and eye gate hinges good for 100 lbs according to the package. I broke the hook part when I first mounted the crane and hung on it. Replaced the hooks with 1/2" bolts.

3 minute video of first try.

^^
Nice job. I'd bet that if you decide to build one from steel it will be a handy tool.

Why wouldn't you just use pallet forks or a grapple to pick those little logs up and load them that way??

I have tried that, and it is the way to go if there is room to park the trailer and maneuver the tractor and grapple around on fairly level ground to get at the logs and load the trailer broadside. But most places I have trouble just finding a place where I can just turn the tractor around without the trailer never mind loading it.

I get exactly what you are talking about. I have several flat openings or "yards" to where I skid logs then load with forks as there is plenty of room.
But some places are too far to skid economically and too rough or steep to make a good yard. Trying to twist myself and tractor into a pretzel to load in these tight areas is challenging and tiring.
Your boom idea has merit Gordon.
